Has the date been posted for the Spring 2023 NROTC Ship Selection? It's a lot of fun to watch the livecast. I have a few of my DS's 1/c mates and his NSI company mates going through. Thanks and good luck to those SWO future officers selecting this year!

Dates have not yet been formally posted, but well placed sources are saying that 22-23 Feb are prime dates to watch. The order of merit list has been distributed to the various units and prospective Surface Warfare candidates should be getting advice from their advisors.

My advice is to determine what is most important to you......home port location or ship class. Line up at least 5 options and have a few more in the back of your mind.

Remember that if you have that precious Blue Chip, you hold the power to "jump the line" and pick your ship. Good luck to everyone!

Any advice to those thinking about the littoral combat ships? Will those be offered for selection? The Navy will be scrapping those brand new ships in a year or two.

LCS can be tricky, especially for a brand new Ensign. My advice is to stay more mainstream in terms of ship class so you understand the full spectrum of Strike Group operations.

But if it has the desired port location and that is important, maybe it's ok. But the LCS really doesn't get out and about very much.

For USNA, I believe you shared with the SAF community that the USNA Ship selection event is scheduled for later this week - official announcment details: https://www.usna.edu/PAO/events/2023/02/Ship_Selection.php

My understanding is yes - there are NROTC ship selection ceremonies done at the national/ global level for both winter and spring commissioning classes.
  • Likely you were watching the November 9th, 2022 NROTC Winter ship selection for a smaller group of midshipmen who commissioned in December, 2022.
  • This larger, often spread out over 2 day event held in later February each year is for those commissioning in the Spring.
  • If you search youtube for "Winter 2021 NROTC Ship Selection" or " Spring 2022 NROTC Ship Selection - Day 1" you can see examples of each selection ceremony.
I think service selection in the Fall - where Mids learn whether they are going subs, aviation, SWO etc. and what role (student naval aviator, student naval flight officer, et al.) is on a cadence where NROTC mids find out first with USNA mids finding out some weeks later. USNA was near 11/18 per this official article: https://www.usna.edu/NewsCenter/2022/11/NAVAL_ACADEMY_CLASS_OF_2023_OBTAIN_CAREER_ASSIGNMENTS.php
The NROTC selection ceremonies were held at the unit level and were some weeks earlier, near 10/5 in 2022, reportedly with all units having those ceremonies within a couple of days of each other- there was an initial glitch which caused maybe a 1 day delay then units regrouped - some immediately, some within a couple of days.

Hope that helps.

It does. TYSM! I actually was thinking of NROTC service assignment being held before USNA. As you mentioned. And then, yes, a ship selection I watched locally, held in November. Your post is spot on. Great clarification.

Exciting times for sure. I remember my own selecting last year. And now he is SWOing away on a ship in the Ocean.

Totally unrelated... What is the red uniform the facilitator was wearing?
She was a prior DCA......or Damage Control Assistant. She headed up the ship's fire department. Those are the red coveralls of the DC organization.

Where does those from USMMA seeking a naval commission (non aviation) fall into the selection process? I know its after USNA but is it before NROTC or at the same time?

Those attending Maritime Academies such as Suny or Kings Point were included in the NROTC ship selection process. They should already have their assignments.
