Selection for the Academy?

I wanted to know how the admissions process at the Air Force Academy works. I've read that your competing against students in your area rather than nationally, and if so why? Also, some clarification on the the admissions process in general.

In a word, nominations. You compete within your nomination slot, then, failing you getting the slot there, nationally. It's easier to get it the first way though, due to a smaller pool (EG: 10 per nom slot v ~500 national pool, probably more.)
