I am about to turn 18 and I know that all males are required to register for selective service when they turn 18. My question is this: Am I still legally obligated to register for selective service even though I have an appointment to the Naval Academy?

Thanks for the help.

do it anyway, it takes about 2 seconds to do a preliminary selective service registration on line. Better safe. My son will be 18 in April and he did his prelim. already even though he hopes to attend an SA. There is no penalty for doing it. There are other posts about this in the forum.

Selective service

to quote the selective service site posted above:
It is now possible for a man to submit registration information early, as long he is at least 17 years and 3 months old. Selective Service will keep his information on file and process it automatically later in the year, when the man is within 30 days of reaching his 18th birthday. An acknowledgment card will be mailed to the man when his registration is processed.
There are exceptions when you attend an SA, but in the end if anything goes wrong, you end up having to register. I have not found any reason for not registering. Everyone else is free to chime in here...

I just got a notification like a week before my birthday saying, "you've been registered for selective service!" I guess it really doesn't matter, but it seems they do it automatically now because a few of my friends also going into the military have gotten the same thing.

Do it anyway

I would do as others have suggested and register anyway. I also know in some states failure to register can impact other things you want to do. My wife has a nephew who failed to register and the state they live in has a rule if you do not register within the prescribed time, you are not eligiable to get your driver's license for another full year.
