I have self harm scars on one forearm and one thigh from 8+ years ago. It's obvious what it is so I'm being honest and up front about it. My recruiter said I need to get a medical clearance letter from a psychologist to submit with my medical. I've found a doctor that is willing to help me, but asked what verbiage or specific things it needs to say. I asked my recruiter what the letter needed to state and he was ZERO help. I have no idea what MEPS will be looking for. I understand this is a disqualifying thing, but I still want to try. I would hate to be disqualified from something 8 years ago that I have zero issues with. Anyone have experience with this?

Is the physician able to attest that they have examined you and find that you have no issues currently? I wonder if they could isolate the incident to one thing that occurred in the past. I’m assuming that you don’t have a psychologist that you have been seeing presently. And that this doctor is seeing you without a history with you. So to me it would make sense that they would want to know that this was an isolated event that happened many years ago (for example situational depression where the situation changes and you’re not depressed anymore).

Maybe another idea would be to also have a letter from your school counselor (or other administrator), if they know your high school years are well adjusted ones.

I’m not a DR, those are my opinions that make sense to me.

Keep in mind that this forum is focused entirely on Officer development through the Federal Service Academies and ROTC which utilize DoDMERB, not MEPS.
