MY DD received her appointment to USAFA this month! She entered her senior year with a 4.2 GPA. In the 7th semester with 4 AP classes she became very behind and then struggled with Mononucleosis for the last month and a half of the term. This resulted in all A's and B's and one failed class which she dropped for the 8th semester. The prerequisite to the failed class was taught during the pandemic, very poorly and entirely on line. The school refused to receive late work even though we had Dr's notes and medical verification of mono.

I'm concerned that this will affect her appointment and how we should proceed. Should we contact Admissions and be totally transparent? Or wait for them to contact us with concerns? I'd rather know sooner than later if this well effect her acceptance so we can go with "plan B." Thank you!

Congrats on her appointment. I wouldn’t worry about the B’s but I think she needs to contact admissions about the dropped class. No idea if it will impact anything, especially given the circumstances. But, my kid let admissions know he was dropping a second semester class and they said fine as long as he wasn’t failing. I don’t know the precise language they used - I didn’t see any of the emails communications.

She also has to contact DoDMERB and update her medical history, if she hasn’t already. Good thing the mono didn’t happen close to reporting in.

I would have your daughter reach out to her admissions rep. It isn't likely that they just won't see a failed class, so I don't think that she is bringing attention to something that might just slip through. Better to get in front of it, so they have some background information when they review it. My guess would be that it will depend on the class she failed. If it was math or science, it might be harder to overcome than if it's an elective. Good luck and I hope she is feeling 100% now.

I appreciate your advice. Those are our thoughts as well. We would rather be very upfront and open.

Speaking of 1st semester grades....are they supposed to be submitted somewhere?
Keep an eye on your portal. It will populate with a number of items that need to be accomplished, the 7th-semester transcript being one. You'll also need a final transcript. Depending on when your school finishes, this can cause a bit of consternation. Don't worry about it, let your school know, and it will work out.
