Harva's mentioned that term and that VMI is one. Assume maybe Citadel, Tex A&M, VPI, are also? Where else?

And what does that mean??

Thanks for enlightenment. It's a big job. :bang: :hammer:

Whistle Pig,

You got it! All of those plus Norwich Univerisity in Vermont, North Georgia College and State University and Virginia Women's Insititute for Leadership which is located at Mary Baldwin College.
They all have a corps of cadets and award Bachelor's degree's.
Junior Military colleges such as NMMI are two year colleges.

VWIL is not a Senior Military College. They have a Corps of Cadet program, but are not one of the 6 SMC's. The others you stated make up the 6 that are designated my congress as SMC status.

Interesting, but can anyone offer additonal info? Why did/does Congress bless these? How are they different?

I stand corrected - VWIL is not a "Senior Military College". It is the only all-female corps of cadets.
In the early 90's Federal court ordered the Commonwealth of VA to create a women's military college since VMI, supported by the commonwealth, refused to accept women. VWIL was created on the campus of Mary Baldwin in 1995. In 1997 VMI then began to accept women into their program per the US Supreme Court,

Congress supports senior military colleges and if qualified upon graduation you are basically guaranteed active duty.

Interesting that the VMIs were able to holdout for so long.

How has their transition to coed gone?

At least from an educational perspective, it's too bad these all-women, all-men bastions have been conquered. The evidence, especially for women, has been clear and compelling.

Oh well. Good buggy whips are hard to find too.

"Hey WP ... Catch this!!!" :tank: :thumb:

The transition has gone well. A lot of things we have to do know that weren't requiered a few years ago, but things run smothly now.

Whistle, I assume your buggy whip comment is a recognition that segregated institutions are antiquated. This is especially true since women now play a very integral essential role in the military. To train separately makes absolutely no sense. This particular idea was a part of the Supreme Court decision to require VMI to go coed.

Well, I appreciate your training point. But actually what I was referring to is that single sex institutions, especially for women, are one of the most productive places for nurturing and developing leadership. In educational research, much of which is pretty fuzzy and debatable, none debate that the loss of many single sex institutions has been a substantial loss when it comes to educating leadership. Again, especially among women.

So I must conclude that military issues aside, coeducation to the exclusion of single sex institutions has been PC but makes less sense when measuring successful strategies. Leadership is leadership.

However, since this is only about military issues and the successful integration and teamwork of both sexes, we cannot place that issue to the side. What good is leadership among women if they have not been trained to exert the same leadership to their fellow male soldiers?

academic standards

Hello, can anyone tell me...is The Citadel and/or VMI academically tough shcools? I know they are tough physically and militarily but what about academics? I have heard many stories but would like the facts>

Thank you!!

For six years in a row, U.S. News & World Report has listed Virginia Military Institute as the nation's No. 1 public liberal arts college and VMI's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is ranked No. 9 nationally among non-doctoral institutions. So as far as VMI goes it is a top noch school in tearms of academics.

I believe what harva is saying is true. The admission process not particularly selective, which, at least directly says nothing of the educational offerings or the students attending.

I will disagree with you Whistle Pig, while the admissions may not be as selective as the Service Academies VMI is a rather selective school. The average high school GPA for incomeing rats is 3.5 and the avarage SAT is 1200 (on the old scale). 50% were in the quarter of their high school class. So VMI is a great academic school, not to mention the military side.

academic standards

Thanks for your feedback...it is helping...how about the actual academics of the The Citadel or VMI once you are at the school..do you feel they are as tough as say West Point or the other academies? How do VMI and The Citadel compare to the academies in academics?

One more question...Is VMI as tough physically and militarily as The Citadel? Thank you!

It's a great institution with loads of history, for sure. Love the museum, too.

Here's what Princeton Review reports:

I don't know how the academics compare to West Point or the Naval Academy, but will tell you they are not easy.

As for VMI militarily and physical compared to the Citadel I can not say for sure, but I will bet that we are on par with, if not better then the Citadel in those areas.

What good is an all girl corps of cadets? You're not going to find that in the real military, not even among the nurses! :shake:
