Hello all,

I am currently a NROTC MO scholarship holder at a senior military school. Last summer we were notified that we would be going to NSI and then later notified we would not be going. That made sense considering we would receive extremely similar training/stress-testing during our 4th class year. Recently we were notified that all incoming AND current 4th class MIDN would be attending NSI this summer in addition to CORTRAMID. That would be 4 weeks of CORTRAMID and 3 weeks of NSI in one summer. It seems to us that that would be a waste of time especially after a year as a MIDN at a senior military college. We have received more recent information that NSI for 4th class MIDN is not final, and that the decision may change. We were basically told that our command is also confused by the change and is not even sure of how to pull of the logistics and is trying to get 4th Class MIDN out of going to NSI. We still have not received any solid information and were told to "Standby to standby." i was just wondering if any other 4th class MIDN or parents at other senior military schools have heard any similar or updated information. Thank you

Couldn't say what's what and agree with your assessment. I also find it hard to believe that incoming freshman would be attending CORTRAMID as well. Seems like something is amiss somewhere, unless they're planning on overhauling all summer training.

That being said, I doubt attending NSI would be a total waste of time. If you end up at NSI you should, in any case, look at is an an opportunity to lead. But then I'm preaching to the choir, right?

I suppose your right and there is certainly an opportunity to lead. However, other leadership opportunities such as coming back early over the summer to pick up rank or a Staff position would be essentially off the table. As well as any possible summer classes. Anyway, thats just how it goes, we'll have to make the best of it if we end up going.

The decision to exclude SMC incoming 4/Cs from NSI last summer was not because of 'similar training/stress-testing during our 4th class year'; that was simply the rationale after the decision to exclude your group because the funding wasn't there. An easy group to target (large number of SMC incoming) and an easy rationale to create to support a financial decision.

Standby to standby is correct. Regardless of your feelings on this issue, the funding is what will drive its implementation or not.

IMHO the squeeze would not be worth the juice regarding what the cost would be for the Navy and what the individual would get out of it after completing freshman year at a SMC. That train has sailed. If the Navy didn’t have the funds for it last year...doubt they’re going to have it this year in addition to funding the new incoming freshman. My two centavos as a retired 30 yr Naval Officer.
