Hello,

Hope you all are doing well.
As most of you know, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has officially rescinded the military’s Covid-19 vaccination mandate for troops on the 10th of Jan but I can't find any update(s) regarding this new policy on any of the service academys' websites. I tried to find any related posts on this Service Academy Forum but I have not seen any discussion except one who was also wondering about it.

1. If you received your appointment after the effective date of the policy change, did your letter mention about the vaccine, and did it say that it is still required?
2. Any one who submitted a religious exemption got an appointment?

Thank you if you took time to read this!

Policies can race downhill at the speed of molasses sometimes. It’s called staffing.

Each of the DoD Service staffs has to draft and coordinate policy for their services consistent with the SecDef directive, determine any exception situations, coordinate that back up the chain with SecDef, coordinate across with medical, legal and operational staffs, coordinate among services, coordinate outside DoD with USCG, which is DHS. There will be massive pixel-tons of PowerPoint slides created. Briefings. Revisions. Issue papers. All the what-ifs will be collected. Language will be pored over. Track Changes in Word will be at full warp or on collaborative review and decision platforms. The lawyers will be poring over it.

This is all before it trickles down to the SAs and the field. There are questions to resolve about deployability to countries requiring vaccination, for example.

I have no doubt the SAs are having internal and joint discussions. Word will be put out. Probably not as soon as some would wish.

Capt MJ,

I'm thankful that you are the first one to reply. Honestly, I was thinking about addressing this to you directly. Truly, it feels like you read my mind!
I really hope that it will be resolved before May 1st. Thank you!!

We could be surprised and clearcut, sensible, straightforward guidance will be promptly put out. Let’s hope for that.

You probably have already seen this, but here is the latest Covid policy that’s in place

I know this is pure speculation but do you think a new policy will be put out before June?

How does it work if you show up without all required vaccines?

My son got all of them but left his proof at home on the kitchen table. So they gave him the ones he couldn’t prove a second time on i day. A valuable learning lesson. ;)

If you hold off on the covid vaccine, and the policy hasn’t updated by then - will they turn you away or give the covid vaccine on the spot?

Me personally, I'd rather not have COVID (or a bad case), so I got the vaccine and haven't worried about it for the past two years🤷‍♂️.

I may have an extra
Specs? Review star level? I’ve been thinking about upgrading mine. Missed the Cyber Crystal Monday sales.

Clearly, in the absence of any real data of any COVID policy coming out, debating the tech specs of crystal balls, magic wands and Magic 8 balls can certainly be entertaining.

The worst part of the policy last year was despite all the cadets having vaccinations going in, Covid ran rampant throughout the formations during BCT. Lots of missed training as cadets went into isolation.

For those not currently in the Department of the Air Force, today the Secretary of the Air Force issued a rescission of the 3 September 2021 policy that formerly mandated all Department of the Air Force military members to have the COVID vaccination. This does not directly answer any of the questions expressed in this forum and others about whether Appointees to the Class of 2027 will have to receive or show proof of COVID vaccination. That policy guidance is no doubt still currently being reviewed by USAFA Admissions, Legal, and others. Just wanted to provide this for those concerned to show that the slow policy machine is moving forward.

I appreciate you for sharing this!

While not directly related to the discussion on whether or not the service academies will require vaccination or whether they follow the revised NDAA language, for those participating in NROTC, you should remember this is a two-part question. One is what the final Navy policy will be that governs Midshipmen either Navy or Marine Option. The second part is whether or not your particular university requires covid vaccination in order to participate. An implied requirement for Midshipmen is that you meet the university guidelines for completion of your degree. If you cannot attend the university due to their covid policy, the Navy or SecDef guidance won't matter. No degree equals no commission.
