Hello! I am currently applying to the service academies and heard about the service academy exchange program. It may be extremely early to think about this as I have not been accepted to an academy yet, but I am interested in learning more about it.

Here are some of my questions:
- What are the requirements?
- What makes a good candidate for the program? (i.e. what looks good to the selection committee, including activities, leadership positions, grades, etc)
- What year do students typically participate in the exchange program?
- How many exchange students are usually accepted out of the pool of applicants?

Thank you in advance for the information!

The exchange program is pretty competitive because they are selecting midshipmen to represent not only the academy, but the Navy itself. Look at the USNA instruction online to find the baseline requirements. You would go on exchange your fall of your 2/C year for the service academy program.

For any program at USNA it looks good if you are involved in your company, are SAT in all mission areas, and have good grades to go along with it. For the exchange program, have a good reason for wanting to go. Talk about broadening your perspective on the other branches and preparing yourself for future service with Air Force or Army officers.

If you have any more questions I was selected as one of the midshipmen for the service academy exchange program for this upcoming fall. I would be happy to talk to you about the process and advice if you PM me.

My nephew (‘23) was an exchange student at West Point in the fall of ‘21 and he had a great experience! Here’s a brief USNA Instagram link about the experience: USNA Instagram

He made some lifelong friends, got an “inside” look at another branch of the military, and even competed with the Army Triathlon team while he was there.

It is a very competitive selection process for the exchange. As it appears that you are only in the "applying to the Academies" phase, you should probably spend more time focused on your actual Academy applications first. Get admitted to one (or more) of the Academies first, and then you can worry about what it takes to be part of the exchange program.
