I am the retired service member (27 years) rated at 100% by VA for wounds in combat.
I’ve been surfing the forum for any/all info on the 65 slots per SA for children of deceased/disabled veterans. I’m assuming there is a much larger pool of applicants in this category as we have been in the fight for nearly 20 years. Does anyone have any idea on the numbers? Should my son utilize this category or Presidential as he qualifies for both? Posts from the early 2000’s say that the slots were easier to obtain but I’m not sure that’s the case now.

Welcome aboard @SF_DAD!

I can't help answer the question but I am confident that there are posters who can. Stand by...

Your son should apply for all nomination sources available to him. It gives the Academy more flexibility to build the class profile and therefore increases his chances of getting in. The two sources you’re talking about, as far as I’m aware, don’t generally have an exact quota every year. There’s an unlimited number of nominations that can go out to both categories. Once you have a nomination, the Academy has the flexibility to offer or not offer an appointment if otherwise fully qualified.

Hi - and all respect and appreciation for your combat-related disability and how you came by it.

“The numbers” mean nothing until a candidate is found fully qualified. Only Admissions can tell us if they have seen an increase in those over the last 2 decades.

I think it’s the case where a candidate can only get one of those noms, even if eligible for both, but I’m only 50-50 or less confident of my recollection, so I will be interested in the correct answer.

This is a great opportunity for your DS to call or jump on the daily live chat with Admissions to get the definitive answer from the primary source. USNA has a live chat. Not sure what other SAs have.

100 appointments can be charged to the Presidential nom authority.
65 can be charged to the 100% disability/missing/captured nom authority.
All who are eligible get the noms, as these are non-competitive.

Here’s some more detailed reading, but it doesn’t address your question.

Understand all...
What I am looking for is a little historical data.
I see a number of posts that show 500 to 800 Presidential nominations a year, depending on SA. I know that the SA’s are capped at 100 per year for Presidential which breaks down to a 1 out of 5 (up to 8) for chances. I also understand that it is how each applicant stacks up to the others in that category.
What I don’t see is that there are roughly ’X’ number of deceased/disabled nominations over the last number of years. The nominations are unlimited, but there can only be 65 in a SA at a time. Basic math tells me that is roughly 16/17 a year. If I knew how many nominations were given I could estimate odds.
MOC is easy for my district... he has 10. Odds are 1 in 10 assuming my son gets one and there are 9 others.

The real competitive number to know is how many of the 500-800 who receive Presidential noms are then deemed fully qualified. That’s the real competition and selection denominator.

I haven’t seen data on the category of interest to you, though I still think there would be fewer overall eligible candidates for that category than the Presidential, even allowing for increased levels of conflict over the last several years.

Great points and thanks for all you do on this forum!
Many times the ALO/BGO/FFR posters here have better insight on data like this. Let’s hope they pop up to join in.

Maybe to add a little clarity to your question.... The different Academy's treat this a little differently. USMA has a specific category and process for SC Noms, different from Presidential. USNA combines the two, one application with boxes for either or both, USMMA I do not believe (someone better equipped can help here please) has this category, and I do not know about USAFA, sorry. 10 USC specifies the number of attendees on campus at one time, but there are always other noms out there they can use if you are a Highly Qualified Candidate. USMMA does not fall under 10 USC so I do not think they have the same processes (they use a statewide nomination system instead of a district nomination system) and appointments are structured by state I believe. USCGA does not use the nomination process, they process based upon needs.

Did you find anything else out in regards? My DS is also in this situation as I am both retired and 100% P/T. In his Presidential application letters he declared both and submitted both my DD214 and my VA letter.
