Two Questions:
  1. Under the employment history, I haven't had a job in high school but it requires at least 2 years of employment history. Do I just write unemployed from birth until 6/2017?
  2. There is a section that asks if I have registered with the Selective Service System. I did submit my form to register, but (without giving away too much personal info) I won't be 18 until a couple months after I-Day and thus my registration won't be processed for a while. So since I don't have a registration number should I just mark no for now and explain what I just explained here?

Does your form have this phrase in the explanation block at the top of the section:
"Do not list employment before your 18th birthday unless to provide a minimum of 2 years employment history."

So, unless you had two years of employment, you don't put anything. They will see your age and make the logical deduction about what you've been doing. If you feel compelled to write something, put "high school student. " The security clearance folks see these forms by the thousands each year from young people going from high school to enlisted boot camp, SA, etc.

With regard to SS, since you have taken action to register, I would check Yes, but write "registration number not yet available due to current age and unprocessed registration."

When it comes to Govt forms:
1) Read the notes and fine print at the start of each block.
2) Don't overthink it.

Yes my form has that phrase, but I guess the way I interpreted it was "if you are young enough to not have 2 years worth of employment, please go past the 18 year mark" which even past the 18 year mark I have zero employment. But I think I'll just go ahead and leave it blank like you said. Thanks!

Just FYI - nothing is going to be done with this form. It will actually be returned to you in September/October where you will enter the information into an online system. Fill it out to the best of your ability and you can ask specific questions in the Fall.

No one is processing the paper SF-86

+ 1 -- In other words, RTFQ (Read the Full Question), ATQ (Answer the Question). Words to live by in both military and civilian (at least legal) world. To many people try to read into a question and answer what they think the person is asking. CAVEAT for those entering USNA -- don't try to parse words with your detailer; answer the question you think they are asking or you will be branded a Sea Lawyer and incur their wrath.

Old Navy - I had to laugh, because I contemplated using ATFQ. Of course, the ancient mariners amongst us know the F can stand for an impolite verb form.

Edit: Thank goodness this was all moved online in the 90's, so that any updates were easy and you could keep your last submission in a take-with file. I recall keeping paper copies of each submission, which got longer and longer each upgrade, and that file was always in with orders and other important papers never left with the movers or put in a checked bag.

Agree with the others.

Also, I just want to say that your Mantis Avatar is way cool!

Haha thanks! I saw it on a bench one day, took a pic, and for some reason ended up choosing it as my avatar. I'm not really into bugs or anything but I thought it looked cool too!
