SF86 Illegal Activities Question...

Also, look beyond the form. At some point (as early as your internship while still a cadet, depends on the job) you may require a TS clearance and need to take a polygraph. It is better to tell the truth on the form than let something to come back to haunt you later. It is the right thing to do and you can sleep well at night too.

Don't need a poly for TS. You do need it for TS-SCI.

You don't need a poly for TS-SCI. I had it for years with no poli. There are two types of Polys given, anti-terrorism which has very easy questions and a lifestyle poly. The questions on the surface of that one are very general in nature but is a kick to the ego when you do it. I have taken both on a several occasions. I agree with civic on a poly, but many clearances and jobs can and do depend on them regardless of my or other's opinions. Answer per the rules. Then if you ever go to get upgraded or take a poly you have a clear conscious you didn't cheat the system and have to deal with that later on. This is your first background check, they only build from here. You don't want to start with a lie, but it's your future, you do what you want with it.

Hoops, I think you meant to say Counter Intelligence vice AT. Can't comment on why you didn't take poly for SCI though.

Polygraphs are a pseudo science. They aren't an actual indicator of truth or lies. It's more intimidation than anything.

A 19 year old looking for the grey area is not likely to pass the polygraph regardless of what you think of the science behind it

If it doesn't ask you to volunteer something, it is not lying not to list it on the form.

True, but a polygraph can be used to reject a security clearance, regardless.

I've heard that polygraphs can be issued at random for both secret and top secret clearances, though I get the impression it is not common.

You do what you want. As a military officer you will be expected to answer questions truthfully. If the question reads charged and/or convicted - you are good. If it says have you done X (committed a crime - as an example) and you have and you 'quibble' you have lied

No one hear knows how will you fill it out and only you will live with it

The polygraph for lifestyle bfor a TS/SCI is pretty common

Hillary and Bill Clinton agree - the truth is subjective

Fill it out, turn it in and quit asking for absolution from people that have told the truth and accepted the consequences

Tons of SCI are given without Polys. SCI with lifestyle Poly or whatever the other one is called these days are different. I have had them all and now have a great job without them! I had an SCI for years without a poly as did tons and tons of my co-workers and friends. Honestly if you ever take a Poly just answer the questions and you will be fine. If you skirt the questions not, it will make a future Poly that much more stressful.
