DS would have practiced shooting at a range before plebe summer.
Practicing isn’t that big of issue. Some can pick up bad habits.
Wow, this thread certainly morphed from the OP question. I had plenty of classmates who never handled a firearm before Plebe summer shoot expert, and others who grew up with guns who didn't do as well. There is no need to go out an train before Plebe summer -- that "E" really doesn't mean anything in the Navy. (It is more or less expected for Marines, but as noted, they qualify at Quantico (and probably a more difficult qualification). If you are going to do anything , going out to a range just to get comfortable with the "bang" might help, but you run risks of developing bad habits in your trigger squeeze .
In response to the OP, perhaps a more recent Midshipman can respond, but aside from formal programs like qualification, Combat Arms or Rifle/Pistol teams, I wouldn't expect there is much opportunity to just go out an shoot. Midshipmen can't keep personal firearms, and frankly, they have plenty of other things to keep them busy. On the other hand, as upperclassman I would expect one could drive to a local range (if there is such a thing in Maryland).
What does a USNA Marine do with all that Navy stuff?
Even the Navy guys (and gals) uniforms that don't get used in the Fleet . Alot of them end up in parent's basement, and shrinks considerably over the years !
A few years ago, we found my P-rade jacket (I don't recall what that uniform is called anymore) in my in-laws attic. I had abandoned it after my June Week swim in the Severn, but my mother-in-law saved it, cleaned it, and kept it all these years. It's amazing how bad the Severn water shrank that jacket !
