Hi. I am candidate for the USMA class of 2023. I recieved an "academic" LOA from West Point in early October and I am now medically qualified/have a nomination but I haven't received a 3Q letter. Is there something else that I need to do that I am unaware of?? Because many of my friends have received their 3Q letter and I am now becoming worried.

3Q......medical, academic, physical. You mention the academic and medical, but not the phyiscal. You have to be 3Q with a nom. The nom doesn't play into the 3Q part.

3Q without a nom.......no chance of an appointment
Nom without 3Q.......no chance of an appointment

The LOA indicates that WP has a great interest in you, you have to pass the physical test . If you already have, then you should get a 3Q letter......but, you will read threads where not all kids get letters for all things. Just shows up in the portal.

also, cannot emphasize this enough. It is way too early to get worried. Enjoy the holidays and your senior year. Could be March, or even later. It is very hard, I know. But you have to be patient.

Keep your nose to the stone, and stay out of trouble!! Control what you can

Sorry I forgot to mention but I passed my CFA so I guess I have to just wait for the 3Q. Thanks.

@CB267, your LOA is conditional. That is, it should state clearly the condition you must fulfill to receive offer of appointment. Therein lies your answer. The condition is different for different people, but again, your LOA should be very specific about what’s standing between you and an offer of appointment.

(By the way — and I say this knowing it could trigger a maelstrom — there’s no such thing as an “academic LOA.” An LOA is an LOA is an LOA.)

Still trying to understand the mystery behind the early LOA. I thought this was primarily for recruited athletes, but now it sounds like it is broader. What is the USMA's process for selecting these well-qualified applicants so early on?

@SY96, the LOA is indeed a mystery. But this much is clear: (1) Precious few are given out. (2) They’re SA’s way of “locking in” certain candidates while the long process unfolds, to discourage them from fleeing to other schools. (3) They’re given to candidates that SA really, really, really wants — for any number of reasons, ranging from academic stardom to leadership prowess to some kind of diversity to athletic ability. (4) They can be issued at any time, even up to and including May. (5) And most importantly, they are not the goal — an offer of appointment is.

LOA's and 3Q letters are issued by the Regional Commander. Some use LOA's more than others. Also, MidCake is correct - there is no such thing as an academic LOA (but strong academics may be a factor). Your file may still be waiting for the academic Q.

Yea, thanks! I checked my LOA and I have done everything I needed in order to fulfill the conditions, I'm just a little worried about the timeline and when I will hear anything from WP. I understand that an LOA is an LOA, but I only said academic to signify that I'm not a recruited athlete and from what I understand I got the LOA based on my academics.

If you've done everything you needed then you just need to sit back, chill, and wait. They'll get to you. You aren't going anywhere, are you? Right. They know that too.

Right on the money............relax.......it could be tomorrow, it could be in February. They want you, as they gave you an LOA, and you are 3Q'ed with a nom. The odds are definitely in your favor, but an appointment isn't an appointment until it is. ............This is the first of a LOT of hard parts, so get used to it!! Don't compare your timeline with someone else, no one knows the rhyme or reason to how and when someone gets an appointment, at least not for certain. Be proud, you have obviously done a great job!! Enjoy these last months of HS, it is going to fly by, and if you are like my DD, she graduated HS on June 26 and reported for R day on July 2 (lots of snow days).........her summer vaca was 6 days long, and she has been going hard ever since.....it will be here in a heartbeat. Congrats!

My graduation date is the 29th and R-Day is the 1st. Imagine that. Good thing that we Seniors in NYS get let out of school on the 11th while the underclassmen take their regents.

@CB267 You may not hear or receive anything additional until mid-January even though you are 3Q with a nom. For the last two years, there was a single big wave of appointments mailed out in mid-January. Enjoy the holidays. Best wishes on finals.

What if you have not heard a thing by now, no nominations yet, no LOA , absolutely nothing but you are very high academically and passed physical and medical , ect. We are from Texas district 13

Keep checking that portal for new info. Daily. It's early yet.
This is the nature of this process.
That said, the best of luck to you and the others.
It's a noble venture you are on.

Then you are just like most other candidates. Hate to burst your bubble, but there are very many others who are “very high academically and passed physical and medical” who are also waiting for any nugget of information. It’s the nature of the beast. Exercise patience and go enjoy your senior year.

Slates aren't due until Jan 31 so you may not hear about a nom until then or maybe even early Feb if the MOC doesn't notify you.

Don’t expect many appointments for West Point till January. The word in the FFR world is that it will be like the last two years.

In the past couple of years were the January appointments just made to those with an LOA? I am just curious because the 3Q letter suggested not to expect any news until the end of Feb. at the earliest.
