Should I drop ROTC and retry sophomore year? OML advice question

First off I am not a contracted or scholarship cadet. I got over confident my first semester, failed a general education economics course I wasn't interested in and finished with a 2.1 gpa. I realized I messed up. My question is, should I not take army ROTC my second semester to focus on my other classes, and then rejoin sophomore year with a higher GPA instead of my 2.1? Or would this be a bad idea to skip second semester ROTC because it would effect my OML? Since I might skip a semester with ROTC would I have to make it up later with a summer ROTC course my sophomore year? Thank you

Dear JustABill, I am not your mom--but what is your plan to retake the economics course for a passing grade (your university should have a policy for this). In your adult life, you will be happy to have had at least a single economics course. Just as in high school, in college, sometimes we take things that do not make sense to us or fall inline with our program, it is part of building our 'universal education'--and preparing us to think about a range of issues and ideas as well as have platforms and models on which to base our future thinking even in other fields. So, first, figure out what you are doing about that Econ course to bring up your GPA. Can you do a J-Term or summer school at the local community college/ Can you take it again next term. Next, if you want to be a Naval Officer I would not drop ROTC. I would press on with the business of showing your PMS and other faculty that you are serious about pursuing a commission, becoming a leader, and serving the Navy and the Nation. (As instructors and mentors of aspiring Naval Officers, will appreciate this much more than the 'in and out' approach you suggest.) If you want a side load scholarship or a contract, the way to get it is to show your dedication and leadership. Your GPA will come up--even if you have to take basket weaving during the summer (make it Nuclear Basket Weaving for the "A"). Good luck. Do not let this discourage you but spend a little time this holiday being reflective about what activities and time management issues you can control and what you can do better next semester. It is not a game ender but a wake up call.

If I recall, you are a college student but not participating in ROTC but are considering AF or Army.

I would sit down with your AROTC ROO or the AF equivalent, and ask for his/her advice on this. It may vary from battalion but the support of your Cadre could ultimately make a big difference in receiving a contract offer. I am concerned that if you don't start XROTC now, that you will fall off the radar and lose their support.

I agree with Dr. Mom, you may want to investigate the pros and cons of repeating the course.

If you are fortunate enough to become a commissioned officer you will definitely be required to study and learn information that you will not be interested in. Success in life will depend on your ability to assimilate the mundane but essential components of your career. Furthermore, if you failed a class BEFORE participating in ROTC, how will you perform while doing daily PT at 0500 and spending weekends on ruck marches in the mud?

Are you AROTC, AFROTC or NROTC? Were you a cadet or Mid during this last semester?

Either way I would not recommend skipping a semester of ROTC. Speaking for AROTC, if you struggled in a class and have a lower GPA this semester I would imagine your battalion will require some study hours to get back on track. You should also talk with your advisor about the option of retaking the failed class, and how to plan your schedule so your not overloaded. You will have plenty of time to bring up your GAP, talk with your cadre and let them know that your working on it and take whatever advice and help they offer.

Thanks I considered all 3 but narrowed down to army is the right one, I'll talk with them. I appreciate the advice
