Hello all,

I am from NC applying for nominations from both Senator Tillis and VP Pence. Both ask for essays - the prompt for Senator Tillis' is "Briefly state why you want to attend the academy of your choice.", while the prompt for VP Pence's is "WHY DO YOU WANT TO ATTEND ONE OF THE MILITARY ACEDMIES? [sic]"

To me these two prompts are asking the same question, and I completed and submitted an essay to Senator Tillis a while ago - is it okay for me to reuse the same (or almost identical) essay, or do I need to rewrite one from scratch? I feel that even if I do choose the latter, the essay will say the exact same thing.

Thanks for any input, I wouldn't want to run afoul of any ethics/plagiarism guidelines.

Well first, unless your work is published, you can't plagiarize yourself. I think if you read the questions to mean the exact same, then certainly, use the same essay. If not, then, you may want to tweak the next one to better answer the question.

For PA senators, it was tricky for my DD. One had to be MORE than 500 words, one was 300-400 words, asking the same question.

I don't read them as the same question.
1. Why do you want to go to that specific academy
2 why do you want to go to any academy at all.

It's akin to why do you want to serve in the Navy vs why do you want to serve. But that's just me.

YMMV

As kinnem says, they are not the same essay BUT - remember the VP nom will be the SAs choice, not the VP choosing.

My DD used her USMA essay and literally changed "USMA" & "West Point" to military academies and added somewhere by land, sea, air, or space!
