Six Months- The Story of Coach Dixon

Great story. Maggie was awesome. One of her former players works with me. She was the real deal. I actually played ball against her many moons ago. We were a few years apart in age, but we played on the same club circuit during the summers. Played a few pick up games with her and was even team mates at an elite camp one year. She was a great coach and an amazing fit for West Point.

I wondered if you knew her.
 
Coach Dixon has been one of my personal inspirations since I was a kid living at West Point when she coached. I can’t adequately describe the impact she had on the community even in her short time. The entire community rallied behind her team that year even though she came in after the recruiting season and with none of the traditional time to prepare for the season that a D1 coach usually gets.

Watching Candace Parker dunk (first time a woman ever dunked during March Madness) during the first half of the Tennessee-Army game in the first round of the NCAA tourney remains one of the most heart breaking moments I’ve ever watched in sports, because until then, Army had actually been running with that powerhouse despite being the absolute underdog. While the wind got cut from their sails after that play, the incredible optimism remained for what the future held for the program the next year under Coach Dixon’s leadership.

When she passed, it was absolutely devastating. I am incredibly thankful they made an exception for her to be buried at West Point along with many other incredible leaders in recognition for her contributions to the community. Her memorial is right next to the old post chapel, and I would run there if I needed to clear my head and refocus while a cadet.

She remains a constant reminder that we never know how much time we’re going to be given and you’ll never know the impact you can have in a short amount of time. Life might derail your plans (Coach Dixon originally wanted to play in the WNBA before she ended up in coaching) but everything happens for a reason.
