Hello,

As I'm applying to SLE program tomorrow as a junior in high school, I would like to ask several questions:

1. Few months ago, I emailed one of the Admission staff/officer at USMA about my naturalization process and whether if I can still apply as a permanent resident (my citizenship will be coming out few months prior to applying to service academies). And they told me that they can view individual candidates (like me) on case-by-case basis. So I did email them back few weeks ago about how can I apply as a permanent resident (meaning w/o citizenship and yes, I do have social security number); however, I still haven't heard back from them yet. My question is, just like the USNA's summer seminar application where you can state whether if you are immigrant, permanent resident, or U.S. citizen, does USMA application also ask for the naturalization status, stating whether if you are citizen or permanent resident, etc,.? *I did contact the staff/officer who sent me the email last time today but haven't heard back yet

2. When I entered the website (SLE section), I saw that the website for the candidate portal was open. But when I put in my Social Security number and my birthdate and clicked "Continue", it said "Your session has timed out. You will now be redirected to Admissions' Home Page". Is this suppose to happen because the official application has not been released yet?

3. Do I need teacher recommendation or any sort of recommendation (from counselor, etc,.) to apply?

4. Does the application asks for questions such as stating my interest for the summer program (I believe Naval Academy's summer seminar application did ask for this)?

5. Does the SLE application open on midnight? Or does it open in the morning/afternoon (I'm currently residing in California and the time is based on Pacific Standard Time (PST).)

Thank you so much and I will highly appreciate your response!

The application can open any time during the day tomorrow. When the portal opened for SLE last year, I believe it was sometime during the afternoon. It didn’t update at midnight!!! I was that kid who stayed up and waited :D

The application is pretty much just your test scores (SAT/ACT). West Point will also make sure you meet the basic requirements for admission the following year (age limits for certain dates, not married or legally responsible for anyone, etc.) to admit you to SLE.

I can’t speak on your citizenship deal. I was born in the U.S. and haven’t dealt with any of the procedures an internationally-born cadet candidate faces. I would assume you’d be fine since you have an SSN, but I’m not positive that’s true.

As for the error, I am guessing that it’s because the portal hasn’t “officially” opened yet? I question that because it’s just what I’ve learned on these forums while reading some of the SLE threads so far.

If you have any questions about SLE itself, please let me know so I can contact a couple of my friends who attended the experience.

Thank you for the response!
Can I use my PSAT score on the application?

Also, if my school does not rank students, does the application ask for estimated rank? (Summer Seminar for USNA allowed me to estimate and indicate whether if my school ranks)? *My school counselor told me to use the decile system that he gave me (based on our class) when I met him.

Use the PSAT! I believe they ask if your school ranks or not....Guess you'll find out tomorrow when you apply.

I was unfortunately also "that" kid who stayed up until midnight! However, it did let me fill out the application and my candidate questionnaire after a few [many] tries.

After I picked all my workshops, sessions, etc, I was greeted with this lovely message:
gBMgI

"Application Error Report
An Error Report has been sent to
Software Support.
No action is needed on your part to report it."

Should I contact admissions tomorrow (or I suppose later today) to figure out if it went through? If you can't tell I'm very eager to get everything in ASAP! Hopefully admissions won't think I'm too crazy.

Thanks, Beat Navy!

UPDATE: I logged in again on the portal and it said the application was complete. Looks like I'm all set. However, I didn't get a confirmation email or anything of that matter. Should I be concerned on that front?

Just pulled a late night and did the same as you. Same error messages and all. I'm thinking it's in because it wouldn't let us back in, but the lack of confirmation email... I just sent an email to admissions to confirm it is in fact in, I'll let you know what I hear back from them. Hopefully it all went through and I'll be seeing you there!

Monday is a Fed holiday.
Computer system maintenance is often set up for Sunday evenings; that could be a factor.

They do ask, however if you do not know your class rank the directions are to put "1 out of 1" in the box.

I am so glad

You saw this.

Friend of mine put 0 and 0 in the boxes and had a very low score for SLE...luckily she knew some people who could fix it for her so she got in. Having no connections, I’d just be out of luck. Read the instructions! Lol

Also, wait for your confirmation. When I accepted my offer in the portal yesterday I got the same system error but when I logged back in, I saw that it had gone through! Capt MJ is right—I’d wait a couple of days before emailing Admissions—they are VERY busy with the classes of 2022 AND 2023 right now!

Poor admissions, this has to be a crazy time of year for them. Do you mean that they likely will send me a confirmation email within a few days?

Thanks, keep me updated! I’ll be emailing them in a few days too if I don’t receive any sort of confirmation.

If they stated that they send every candidate confirmation emails, it may take any time from a few days to a week or two. Perhaps longer.

The email should be automated. I got it literally seconds after I submitted my CQ last year.

That makes sense because Admissions would probably be too busy to do these! I’m fairly certain it took a day or two for mine to come, though.

It seems all of the 2023 candidates are having the same problem with the portal and lack of confirmation, etc. I’m going to wait several days and then contact admissions or see if anyone else has any luck.
