I was fourtunate enough to be accepted into the USMA SLE and I immediately confirmed my acceptance. But now this causes a conflict because I am also trying to attend Boys State and the AFASS all around the same time period. My school also has all of my finals in this period of time so it's going to be a very big crunch. I was wondering if it came down to it, is there was any way I could change my decision to attend the SLE if I already accepted?

Yes. You gracefully decline and tell them you're going to Boys State, which is better for your application in the long run.

This is a great question for your RC. Mom is right probably for 90% of the candidates on this topic. For the most part boys and girls state trumps SLE. However depending on your packet and your leadership score, your RC may advise you to go to SLE. It is all dependent on what your leadership profile looks like in your packet...

My son chose SLE over Boy's State. He had maxed out his leadership points in his application (We learned this later. It never occurred to us to ask our RC at the time but it is good advice to ask you RC if you need more leadership points), so attending Boy's State would not have helped him. He'd wanted to go to SLE for years and had no interest in Boy's State. He's a cadet at WP, so this worked out fine for him (and we are from an uber competitive state).

Yes, Boys State will most likely generate more of an impact to your WCS than SLE, but have you had the opportunity to visit WP, confident in your choice to pursue a career in the military and, if so, that West Point is the right fit for you? If not, you may want to prioritize SLE and "try it on for size". Also, an applicant with a passion for WP is likely to perform much better in their MOC interviews than those that are simply checking the boxes.

What about asking to switch your session, so that you can go Boys state then SLE (or vice versa) back to back. My DD had made arrangements with her school for an alternate time when she could take her finals, in the even that they conflicted with SLE (there did not end up being a conflict).........

DS NASS June 2-7 SLE June 9-15 Florida boy state June 17-23. We are driving him to Annapolis and West Point He is flying back to Florida after West Point. His school finals is in the week of May 20. Where is home?

My son would have not missed SLE for anything! His RC also highly recommended AIM so he applied there as well and was fortunate to have been accepted for both. He was accepted to both WP and CG and will graduate WP this May.

@BSN1985 - ditto for my son. He'd wanted to go to SLE for years and nothing was going to get in the way of his acceptance to SLE.

My current plebe took her high school finals all 2 weeks early to go to sle. She did sle then mass then girls state all without a night at home. Her teachers were very accommodating. She lived sle.
