Good morning, my DD is ready for SLE, she as plane ticket, and also the packing list and I have a couple of questions about it, I read they ask to bring: a blanket, a fan (barracks have no air condition), and sweat pants also.

May sounds silly, but Im a beach mom, summer here is hot, no blankets or sweats.
So, my question is about the weather there in June, did they will need a blanket? is so, thick or slim?, they ask for sweats and sweater (is cold in summer there?), but also a fan because is hot...Im a little bit confused, any advise for no over packing will be apreciate. Thanks!

Grew up not that far from WP in NJ; early to mid June is more likely to be 'fan' than 'blanket' weather but bring both as suggested. Early AMs can be cool; you are above a big river valley and it can make its own weather so sweats are useful. [Cotton = bad, fleece/synthetics = good]

An inexpensive fleece blanket from a camping store is probably fine; they are light, pack small, dry quick if needed, and can be thrown in the wash.

All that stuff is on the list for good reason . . .

Thank you for your answers, it helps :)

The barracks have no AC. The sweat pants would be more for night wear and going back and forth in the bathrooms. The bathrooms are across the hall. Cadets must wear a robe when in the bathroom and walking back and forth. The blanket is just something to cover themselves during night time as they sleep. They may provide sheets.

They will room females in the same room but co-ed floor. They may have 3-4 in a room. Mark everything with your name

My son did not bring a fan and he survived. The fan is really a personal preference thing. If you love AC, then you may feel that a fan is essential. It is just a pain to schlep. And they will make you run with all your stuff - just to start the week off on the right foot. :)

And yes, take a sharpie marker to everything you bring.

Thank you for your tips, but what do you mean they make them ryn with all the stuffs?...just curiosity...also the sweat pants and sweater are just for the night, not for working out?, to see wich one are the best. Thanks.

This was what happened to our cadet. We arrive at WP and drop the boy off. We wait around a bit because, well, we are curious parents. The CLE participants are marched off of the staging area. Once they rounded the corner of the building (and were pretty much out of sight of the parents), they were ordered to start running to the barracks. As an observer, it was amusing. Perhaps not so much for the participants who were unprepared for this. Mine packed everything in a backpack, so it was no big deal to him. It was a real hassle for those who packed heavily.

They will likely do PT in shorts and t-shirts. My son came home with a collection of (issued) WP shirts. It's only a week - don't over pack. Get used to a bit of hardship since if you do attend USMA, basic training involves a lot more 'inconvenience'. Might as well get used to it.

I attended SLE week 2 last summer. Although it was early June, it got quite cold (although I'm a Florida native it was still pretty cold) since it rained while we were on the drive up to West Point. Make sure you definitely bring some cold weather sleeping clothes because it'll get a bit uncomfortable at night with the weather. The fan was optional and I didn't see it necessary at anytime while in the barracks.

On another note, during SLE they'll group all the girls in the platoon on one floor and all the guys on another. So the girls will have their own bathroom/floor while the guys will have their own.

It can be cold in June and it can be hot. It's the luck of the draw as to what weather you'll have while at WP.

I attended SLE Session 1 last year, and I don't recall wearing sweats / sweater at all. It did rain a couple days near the end (and so was a bit cold), but the light rain jacket we were issued was sufficient. I am from Texas, so I'm very used to heat. However, a lot of what we have is dry heat, and it can get very humid right on the Hudson. So I would definitely recommend the fan: mine broke about halfway through, and while I managed, it would've been nice to have. In terms of blanket, a light one will be more than fine.

I remember going for the baseball camp and was up until 1 or 2 every night because of how hot I was. I even broke open the ice packs for my arm and put them on my chest, at times this did not even work. I would highly suggest bringing a fan! I'll be doing this when I go to SLE in June.
