Good morning (from the east coast)
What are some requirements necessary for SLE? I looked under the FAQ section but I didn't see PSAT scores. What is a good range for SLE along with extracurriculars?
Thanks!

SLE, Summer Leadership Experience, is a good program. However, it is not required for admissions. The percentage of acceptance rate is much lower than getting an appointment at WP. SLE allows a prospective candidate the opportunity to see, touch, smell WP. The weeks activities have no reflection on daily life at WP being a cadet.

I would encourage you to take the PSAT test, and ACT/SAT on your own. There is no minimum score. The point is you have taken the PSAT. I would also encourage you to look at Boy/Girls State that does contribute to leadership on your application to WP.

What will be more important is you high school courses you've taken and going to take. Make sure they reflect the recommendations outlined on WP admissions. And your grades are high to ensure your in the upper 15% of your class.

The only real advantage to SLE is you have the opportunity to start your application process earlier than others by two or three weeks

I love reading your comments and the push hard press forward at the in. I know it doesn't dictate your acceptance but without a doubt a confidence boost. I was nominated for Boys State, NHS, NEHS (secretary), Key Club (secretary), top 6% class, all honors and AP, 4 varsity letters, and team captain.

At the end***

Definitely on the right track...agree with many that attendance at SLE does not aid your chances for admission. However, it did give my son something to discuss at his Congressional nomination interview. The panel spent a few minutes on this with him and he did know of a few others interviewing that had not attended SLE.

Anyway, it did solidify his desire to attend.

Good morning,

From what I heard SLE is not a deal breaker and academics is most important but being able to perform physically is definitely up there, too. That said, the USMA site appears to be going down a lot so when I try to find out some SLE info, it is for not. Does anyone know the SLE PFT requirements, high/lows, etc? Thanks. Jack

Yes, academics such as class rank and test scores are important. But like the USMA application, leadership/extracurriculars are important as well. I know you can go find the maxes for the CFA on their website. But it is down, I think they might possibly be changing the SLE date.

I highly recommend applying to other service academy summer seminars as well and attending multiple if you are fortunate enough to be selected and have the capacity to. I attended SLE and USCGA AIM. West Point was always the place I wanted to go and still is. However, AIM was a pretty realistic week of what could be expected out of Swab Summer. West Point had a few moments of intensity but as a whole was showing more of the academics, briefings, and athletics that could be expected. My heart has always been with the Army, a week at AIM only reaffirmed that.

I agree with you. Take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you. Explore, be curious, investigate, ask question.

@ontothefray22 Don't know if this helps, but with (IMO) 'decent' test scores, 3-4 leaderships, 5-7 clubs, 3 sports, and a good ranking, I got into SLE last year. I loved it and I hope you can experience it too. Squad members all had amazing and unique personalities, cadre answered questions honestly, and professors offered great academic insight, though many fell asleep during the briefs..

If you have any questions I can answer, please feel free to PM me; I'm not an admissions pro, but I'll help you as best as possible. Good luck, and please keep us posted if you get accepted! :)

P.S. - get all of your squadmates' contact information; I still keep in touch with mine!

Yes, same with our DS. He had previously attended Naval Academy STEM program and was accepted into SLE, USNA Summer Seminar, and AFA Summer Seminar. He was able to attend SLE and Air Force as the travel logistics did not work for Naval Academy (he had already attended a USNA Candidate Visit Weekend). He was not accepted to USCGA AIM - but received an appointment during Early Action. DS received 3 nominations to West Point and 2 nominations to AFA and last week received an appointment to West Point (first choice). Attending the summer programs helped him answer the question on the congressional applications about "what have you done to learn about the academies and life in the military"? In addition, as others wrote it provided convenient fodder for the congressional/alumni board interviews.

SLE is also partly a recruiting effort to get those who might not have otherwise considered attending an SA to become interested in the program. Many get chosen and immediately realize this is NOT for them. I would not get overly focused on how to get selected since none of us know the criteria and they attempt to invite people from all over the country, so more factors then test scores/ECA's/sports are considered. The fact you get turned down for SLE really has no bearing on your potential to get an appointment. Lots of older thread discuss this.
