Hi, I have recently qualified to participate in the connecticut class L track state championship meet for javelin. Ive been getting better very quickley. The meet is on June 2, but the problem is im enrolled into SLS session 1 (may 29-june 4). I cant change sessions either, both are full. I dont want to let my team down in the meet, but I dont want to miss SLS. Is it bad if i dont go to SLS? Im stuck, thank you, tom.

Sls or state meet

What is the end game here? If you want to go the Academy, go to SLS. They more than likely are aware of you being an athlete. I love sports myself, but think of it this way, where do you see yourself in 5 to 6 years. I would bet not running in a pro track and field competiton.

Best of Luck,

RGK

I tend to disagree. You can always plan another visit to West Point, but you can't plan another visit to the state meet! I also think it would be worth more on your application than SLS (which they already know you qualified for). However, I just can't see NOT going to state if you qualified for it. I think I would always regret that.

Some may come down to though how you think you'll do. If you have a chance of placing and truly helping your team, then I would definitely do it. If you barely made the cutoff and doubt you'll do anything other than "get to go", then I might lean more to SLS.

Good material for your interviews/essays next year though no matter what you choose!

I recommend you go to SLS. You get a firsthand experience of West Point, which may affect whether you really want to go or not. You also get to complete the CFA there, which gets that done early. Furthermore, you have a better chance of getting an LOA should you attend SLS. With good performance and effort at SLS, you may get a good Squad Leader's recommendation, helping you even more in getting an appointment.

Perfectly said, marciemi! My thoughts exactly.

If you are going to potentially make a difference I would go to the state meet. That shows dedication and commitment and if you are in a good state that you are a good athlete. If your team isn't in contention go to SLS. You can re-qualify next year and you can always throw jav at one of the invites in June/July.

State Meet. Qualifying for and competing in the state meet is a big deal.
You know how West Point values athletics? They also value the level of your competition.
You can get into West Point without going to SLS. If you skip the state meet you may never get another chance.

SLS is a leadership experience. It's a good visit but not the reality of actually being a cadet. In the fall make a candidate visit - this is a better look.

Have you called them up and explained your dilemma? Could they really not accomodate one more person?

thanks for all the help guys, I really want to go to SLS. But, my team has a good chance of winning states and im ranked 4th as of now. I think ill have to go to the meet. Hard decision

I recommend the state meet. It show your commitment to the team. SLS is a great experience, but it will not hurt you if you cannot attend. I got into SLS and could not attend due to my school schedule. I found other ways to visit. SLS is for YOU to evaluate the academy, not the other way around. You already have a head start on the application process by opening a USMA 2015 file via the SLS application. My personal advise to celebrate your acceptance to SLS and go to the meet and make your team proud. Then you can put your attendance- and hopefully achievements- at the meet on your nomination and USMA applications.

I like this idea.... Admissions has worked with me on a few things already, and they may be able to help you out if you explain the situation...

I'd say state meet first and foremost. SLS isn't a requirement by any means. Also, how do you think USMA interprets ditching a team in the state meet? I'd call them to let them know and see if they can slide you in another session. If not, I'd go with the meet but ultimately your decision.
