DS will attend SLS session 1- he is looking forward to it so much!

Do any of you know whether there is some sort of "graduation" on the last day? I thought I had read that but of course can't locate that info now.

Along the same lines, is there much opportunity for parents to see the campus when dropping off and picking up?

We live in Michigan and are thinking we will drive our son out, entertain ourselves for the week and pick him up afterwards. Any suggestions for semi-local attractions are most welcome!

Thanks in advance for input.

Can't offer any help with SLS. Sorry.

But if you do decide to stay the week, there are lots of wonderful things to do! The Hudson River Valley is magnificent. FDR's home is not far in Hyde Park and the Vanderbilt Mansion is there as well. Lots of West Point parents recommend eating at the Culinary Institute of America.....also in Hyde Park. It is very easy to take the train for a day in NYC; DH and DS1 took a wonderful Grayline Tour of Manhattan.

It's fun to go to Orange County Choppers in Newburgh. They were filming the TV show the last time we were there.

The tours offered through West Point Tours are excellent and informative.

A few of my friends' parents run the classes at SLS and from what I heard there is a graduation on the last day. Parents should be able to visit the base as it's not closed. If you don't have military ID, they check ID/license at the Thayer gate, and then search your vehicle at the next gate down the road.

I don't think visitors without military ID can come through the other gates, but I don't really remember.

I'm pretty sure you can visit the campus (just bring ID).

We did it last Summer...

NYC botanical gardens are a lovely half day.

Last year for SLS they did have a graduation event. If I had to do it again, I would have gone up a day earlier so I could take a guided tour of West Point.

Same here. We never got a legit tour. I never was able to even see the inside of the library.
