SLS

i am more of a math/science type of guy, so i chose and received mathematics, civil/mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. For electrical engineering, we built a digital thermometer and light seeking bug. For civil and mechanical, we had two competitions: one was to build as light of a bridge as possible that holds the most weight, the team with the highest ratio each won a gold army safety helmet (i got mine right behind me); and the other contest was what pair could build a motor that can pull a specified object the fastest. Mathematics was just a simple (but interesting) math course. While at SLS, the history workshop appealed to a lot of people.

They may let you update the SLS app this year but last year they did not.

As far as classes go, you can't go wrong with any of them. Pick what interests you. Don't go on what others say; make your own choices on the classes.

Not to pick a fight or anything, but they did allow people to change their profile, but it was not at the top of their agenda since they were getting ready to receive the class of 2014. There is no point really, since you get to edit your profile when the actual app starts anyway.

I am having a big problem with the application! It doesnt work. Every time I go to apply it tells me I need to set up a cadet portfolio or answer the questionnaire whatever first. So I do that, get the email, then go back to registration and get the same message. It is like somehow I am not getting in the system!

By not being able to update your application I mean that if you are denied you are not going to SLS. If your SLS application is rejected then you cannot update the SLS application and then get accepted like you can for the actual USMA application. A MALO on the boards posted a story a few days ago about how a candidate was denied for SLS then got a 32 ACT score. Even the Regional Commander could not then get the candidate accepted to SLS.

I guess you could update your application if it has not gone before the SLS admissions people. However, the update would have to be within a few day or two of submitting your application for that to work.

Did you fill out the entire questionnaire? I initially applied and my questionnaire contained only background information without any activities/majors etc. It gave me the same message and I found that there was more to the questionnaire that was added on. Are you sure you filled all of the bold fields?

If I'm interested in the air force academy, would you guys recommend that I still apply for SLS? I know there are benefits to going to the other academy's summer things but is it worth it?

definately! Even though its not USAFA, you'd still get the idea of what a service academy is like.

And speaking about multiple applications, can you attend more than one academy's summer seminar, to help you compare them? Or is that not done?

Problem is I dont even think I got to the point you are talking about. When I went to register, it told me I had yet to open my file, go do that and return to this page. So I open the file (which was only like contact info) then I return to the page and try to register again and it gives me the same message that I need to open a file. I have been trying this all day and am pretty confused and frustrated. Did your opening the file take a while to go through or something (I did get a confirmation email back already though?) Maybe I should contact admissions?

did you get a login id and password when you submitted the questionnaire?

After you submit the questionnaire, which has class rank, clubs, and athletics and some contact information you have to fill in, you should receive an email that has your name and your West Point ID number and password.

I never have seen that. Are we talking about the same thing. It continually tells me to fill out the thing to "open a file" at west point. I can not even get into the specifically SLS questionnaire.

It is definitely possible to attend multiple summer seminars. I went to West Point's Summer Leaders Seminar, Naval Academy Summer Seminar, and Air Force Academy Summer Seminar in that order. Also, I met people at the seminars that went Coast Guard's AIM in addition to the other three.

Many candidates attend multiple academy summer programs.
In the past, West Point's was more competitive because they did not take as many candidates. I don't know how many the other programs are accepting this year but West Point will be accepting 900 applicants. They accepted 600 in 2008.
One advantage in going to multiple summer programs is that you will take the CFA. The CFA is standard across all academies, so if you pass the CFA say at USMA SLS and you are applying to USNA, you can have your scores sent to USNA. Some people do better when they are taking the CFA with others. That competitive spirit seems to kick in.
