Smoking Policy

Okay - permissible was probably a poor choice of wording. Lots of activities are permissible but not beneficial. But, I believe that just because one will potentially be put in harm's way doesn't mean you have to put yourself in harm's way (smoking, dipping, etc.) on purpose. Where is the wisdom in that??

I'm not saying that tobacco use (particularly cigarette smoking and dipping) are in any way good for you. It just galls me that so many folks have jumped on the "If a smoker is 1,500 miles from me, then my great-great-great grandchildren may suffer from a stuffy nose!" mentality that has gripped the issue. It's nuts.

You know what? McDonalds is bad for you. Soda is bad for you. Breathing the air in the city of New York is bad for you (probably equivalent to smoking a pack a day). When do we stop?

I still remember that IDIOT Surgeon Genral Elders arguing that tobacco should be banned but drugs should be legalized. Wha? :confused1:

I dislike tobacco use (short of a fine cigar or pipe) as much as the next person. My second roomate at NAPS was a dipper and my first wife a smoker, so I know how disgusting and STUPID the habits are, but unless it affects your ability to perform or the ability of a command to maintain good order, discipline, and readiness, then it shouldn't be banned.

But hey, I'm not SECDEF, and I'm not likely to become SECDEF under the current CINC, so there it is.

I started smoking in 1980... ugh.... quit... started... quit.. started.. and on occasion still have one...

my D is the President of a program at school called Prevention Team (aka TATU-teens against tobacco use), and I always hear about it and how stupid I was/am.. I agree with her on a regular basis and remind her that its a good thing she is smarter then I was/am...

My 14yr old son is an active member of the online site NO Stank You.. and he also tells me how stupid I was...

AHHHH to be a parent, is to remind our children that we have tried to raise them to excel beyond us..... and to raise them smarter....

The interesting thing is that both my parents smoked at some point in their lives.

My mom, long before I was born, was a regular smoker. One day she was sitting with a friend in the kitchen smoking a cigarette and out of the blue announced that "This is the last cigarette I will ever smoke." She crushed it out, and that was that. Go figure.

My dad began smoking as a teenager. When I was growing up, he was a regular pack-a-day smoker. Inside the house, in bed, in the car, it didn't matter. We (my mom, sister, and I) hated it. Interestingly enough, when we took long roadtrips (which we did quite often) Dad would only smoke his pipe, and we all LOVED it. We would get home after a few weeks and marvel at how CLEAN the house smelled. That would last a few days and we'd be back to normal.

When Dad was 39, his heart simply decided to stop beating one day. That's it, I'm done, I'm stopping. It had zilch to do with his smoking, but it did land him in an ICU for the better part of a month. While there, he was roomed with a man who was dying of emphysema. You can imagine what THAT sounded like...

The man died.

When my father was being released from the hospital, he asked the doctor if he could continue to smoke. The doctor said, "Well, what happened to you had nothing to do with your smoking, but remember that guy next to you? If you want to die like that, then keep smoking." On top of that, my father reasoned, "You know, I've been smoke-free for a month now. Why restart?"

He never did.

I've tried a pipe a few times, and enjoyed a few good cigars. I like cigars, but my wife not absolutely forbids me from smoking any others ever again. I have no earthly idea what a cigarette tastes like because I've never so much as taken a puff.

I try to teach my daughters that smoking is a nasty and disgusting habit, despite the fact that their mother and grandmother are both chimneys. Fortunately, the little ones seem to agree with me. They hate it.

I wish the cigarette and dip industries would go out of business due to lack of interest in the market, but I'll be damned before I call for a ban. Wouldn't work anyway.

You have my prayers, brother. I know it can be tough, but at least you're trying. Hang in there!

When people again decide that taking personal responsibly is the right thing to do, if we are lucky.

Preach it. That concept seems to have died altogether. :frown:

A fine “contraband” cigar…..yep, that is why I started Smoking again back on 8 November 2008. :yllol:

LOL. Well, at least you did it in style. Provided you don't live with one hanging off your lip all day, cigars are far easier on the lungs than cigarettes.

From what I've heard, Cuban cigars aren't all they're cracked up to be anymore. The QC sucks, and it shows. Dominicans and the like are all the rage. Sadly, I never got a chance to try a real Cuban to be able to make my own determination, and my wife will crucify me without wood or nails if I smoke one now, so I guess I'll stick to beer. :thumb:

Actually, it's the counterfeit Cuban cigars that are damaging the reputation.

A genuine Cuban from a bona fide Cuban manufacturer is far and away superior to most cigars, but a counterfeit Cuban (and yes, some counterfeit cigars actually made in Cuba are "Cuban" cigars but counterfeit nonetheless!) can leave a sour taste in your mouth, since counterfeits represent about 80% of all "Cuban" cigars sold in the USA.

Thus, someone who has never smoked a genuine Cuban Montecristo #2 tries a fake, and is supremely disappointed.

Yes, the DR and Honduras is making some fine product these days, close enough where the premium demanded for real Cuban cigars (upward of $300-$500 per box of 25) is no longer feasible.

PS - I believe USCGA Cadets are allowed to have a humidor on their desk. :thumb:

Hewy did you know it is illegal for any american citizen ANYWHERE in the world to buy any Cuban goods, including cigars??? I found this out after I was in Canada a couple of years ago, and after the Border patrol searched my vehicle (intensively) and found nothing... not sure what they were looking for... previously there was a limitation as to how many/much we were allowed to purchase, but now it is completely illegal no matter what $$ amount.
