SMP question

It is the end of my freshman year, and I would like to enroll in SMP. Because I do not have schedule space to put both my 100 and 200 level ROTC courses in next year, I would like to do basic training this summer to get the 100's out of the way. The most important thing is that I do not get pulled out of university--so heres my question: How soon after I contract with Army National Guard do I have to contract with ROTC so that I am not deployed? I can officially join the guard in a few days, but I will have to pass the army pt before I can contract with ROTC, and, I just blew out my arm today.

Alastairl: I don't know the answer to this question although I spent a morning perusing the AKO web site and a few others as well- lots of information- no specifics that I could find. I wish I could help you with some details culled from the ARs - but I will offer some advice as a friend of mine teaching at VMI told me that one of his cadets there did the SMP route after his 3rd class year (Sophomore year) and dawdled signing his ROTC contract- and discovered that he got deployment orders from the Maryland National Guard in the interim. So- my advice- go straight to the ROTC department and then to the ANG recruiter and get the regulations about when you become nondeployable. There clearly is a period of time after completion of your basic training to sign your senior ROTC contract at which point you are nondeployable- but if you aren't even taking 200 level ROTC courses yet- you may well be in the deployable zone next year.
