I follow Navy Football @NavyFB on that social app. I am seeing many football players receiving an offer of appointment last few weeks (it’s May 7 today) as there is always a retweet by NavyFB. I understand there are different “buckets” of appointment and I am fine with that, and I do like watching Navy wins. I did not like one kid posted his weeklong recruiting trip from WP to USNA to other civilian schools for an entire week though. I am curious how others view D1 sport recruitment/blue chip for SAs.

If you click on the profiles of the players who have talked about receiving "offers", you will see that they are all high school juniors. I don't think they are referring to "offers" as offers of appointment, as that would be too early.

There are a lot of older (often contentious) threads on the subject of sports recruiting. They vary from those who feel USNA should not have D1 sports to those who think it's a great idea (and everything in between). EVERYONE recruited to play football (for example) is NOT going to be a blue chip prospect. None of us know how many there are. Getting recruited is also no guarantee of getting an appointment.

Its the same for all of the Academies. There are extremely strict NCAA Rules for Recruited athletes that the Academies even have to follow. I promise you they are not on week-long recruiting trips. The athlete cannot be on school grounds for more than 48 hours and they are only allowed 5 school official visits - this includes academies. Most of the athletes are top notch and I would bet have the application and GPA and Tests stats to back it. Most athletes are not a Blue Chip the academies are banking on these recruits getting in on their own. I would go even further to say, I would bet an athlete doesn't even know if they are a Blue Chip or not. They all still have to compete just like everyone else.

....and probably a few of those posting on FB are bragging/exaggerating to impress whomever is reading it.

Those who actually are blue chip recruits, know it. Those who are not blue chip recruits often think they are.

Many SA athletes are excellent students. However, many are not and would not get an appointment to a service academy based on their academic skills. An admissions report to the USMA Board of Visitors a few years ago showed that more than half of the recruited athletes (125 of 218) had scores that would have made appointment unlikely without special consideration.

As Time2 says, there are alot of threads on the issue of recruiting, and many different perspectives. I have mixed feelings....I am one of those that thinks that Academics/SAT-ACT's aren't everything, and that some consideration be given to encourage good athletes to attend USNA. It takes a special person to attend a Service Academy and participate in D1 athletics successfully, and many turn out to be outstanding Naval Officers. That being said, I am opposed to completely obliterating admissions and performance standards to field a competitive D1 football team. What it comes down to is balance ..finding the balance between athletics and academic performance, and giving student athletes a chance to shine.
