So...what's the story on your avatar?

Great Story.

I still remember mine also. SSGT Longoria was SDI, SSGT Armstrong (Recon out of Nam) and SGT Watkins.

SGT Watkins had it out for me, I'm sure of it. Mostly because he told me so.

Later in the fleet we became friends and I have to say, he got me in trouble once. He actually got us thrown out of Disneyland. You know how hard it is to get thrown out of Disneyland.

If you're on this board Sgt Watkins, Thanks alot :) i still remember it like it was yesterday.

JB

Following JB’s lead, I have changed my avatar to my very first Unit in the US Marine Corps.

2ndbn.gif

It all started here in Oct 1977. 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island SC

Wow does it seem like it is so long ago. But I can remember it like it was yesterday. I had three Drill Instructors. My SDI was a S/SGT who had completed three tours of duty in Vietnam as a Marine Infantryman. I used to think he had a vengeance for me because it felt like every time he was near me it was always “Push my deck to China Recruit” and off to the quarterdeck I would go…..

I ran into him in the fleet about 6 years later in Oct of 83’. I was a SGT and he was a 1stSGT. He was with 1/8 and I was with 2/6. It was in Beirut Lebanon, he was wounded but still moving making sure the perimeter was secure and I can remember him smiling as he looked me in the eye and said “out of the entire Marine Corps and they send you to relieve me” and as he shook my hand he continued, “you’ll do fine Boot, you’ll do fine” and then we went about our job. I have ran into him a few times since, but that day still enters my mind when I think about that time.

I have been back to Parris Island many times since that day. I was stationed there for awhile and have had the privilege to train new Marines there. I have watched the children of fellow Marines walk the parade deck as well. But I am forever indebted to those Marines of 2nd Battalion who trained me.

Mine is beautiful Mt. Rainier reflected in a lake.

Weather forecasting in western WA: If you can't see Mt. Rainier then it is raining. If you can see Mt. Rainier then it is going to rain. :thumb:

A yr later and I finally put on an avatar. Mine also is an Ann Hand creation. A gift from my closest friend at Bullets retirement was this pin(AF design), thus it is appropiate for me.

For the women on this site, her jewelry is not only beautiful, but well worth the cost. This pin is so heavy, I have to be particular on the clothes I put it on, because it will weight it down. I guess that is why Cindy McCain always wears her 2 pins (navy and marine) on her collars. Now I just have to wait to Bullet gets home to add my signature!

Mine is a top secret device that the Air Force keeps in Cheyenne Mountain and uses to travel to other planets (and the Pegasus galaxy).

And mine is the symbol for that awesome program. lol!

I saw in some Stargate special that there really is a "Stargate Command." Apparently it's a broom closet in Cheyenne Mt.

I have seen the SG-1 door on my tour of Cheyenne! My BCT squadron was the honor squadron, so we got to take a tour of the facility. If you walk through the door, it transports you to the SGC! :thumb:

haha! I was wondering if it was real. If I recall correctly, the guy on the special only said something like he "heard there was such a thing."

I believe it's from this special (if someone is enthusiastic enough to watch):

I decided to change my avatar...this is my girlfriend. We rescued her from SC as a pup and named her Myrtle. Our family tradition is all pets start with the letter M and are military related, they are also white and black.

It started with Maguire (AFB Bullet and I were married at)
Maverick (weapon)
Mac short for McDonnell Douglass...because Bullet said he knew it would always get home
Milli (Militia)
Myrtle (Myrtle AFB in SC)

Myrtle is also known as the turtle b/c Bullet and DS (she is his dog) both are affiliated with the TERPS!

And no we do not have 5 pets...Guire left us in 06 (Border collie...was with us for every move until the end. believe it or not his ashes are in a Bullet container, b/c he was his running partner). Maverick (black persian cat left us in 04 and Milli is now takes the honor of him...don't come to our house if you are afraid to cross a black cat, b/c she is a black cat)

Well....mine is really deep here....are you ready......I am Popeye's Mom and mine is Popeye at about 9 or 10 months of age.....now 17 and about 6 foot 2 and headed to Annapolis on July 1st. We discovered months back while sorting through pictures for a slide show for high school graduation that we had countless pics of him dressed in sailor suits. This one looks like Popeye.....see it was deep wasn't it. :)

I loved Myrtle and Milli. Myrtle about tackled me and Milli actually would come sit with me. :)

Photo buttons

For popeyesmom, I DO hope you are going for max plebe embarrassment factor and getting those large photo buttons made up with your mid's photo and "USNA '13," "Proud Family of Popeye," etc., on them! I enjoy watching all the parents and family members walk around with those on both during I-Day and Commissioning Week events.:shake:
I guarantee you will get the maximum eyeroll with OH MOM if you get the photo buttons, especially after posting this Popeye photo on this forum.... Not sure where people get the photo buttons, but am sure they can be made up online and done at photo shops, WalMart, etc.

I also decided to change my avvie. Now 'tis of Big Round Top, in Gettysburg, PA. Growing up, my family took many field trips to Gettysburg, and so I have many fond memories of the place. Over the years it has changed a lot, as the those in charge of the park have begun cutting down trees and restoring the fields to how they were during the battle. Still, it is one of my most favorite places to visit.

I guess the avatar thread has motivated many posters.

BTW Hornet...Myrtle doesn't tackle, she is a boxer, she just wanted you to box with her.

Navy football

That is the Walnut sized ring that the Navy Football Players received for winning their 6th consecutive Commander In Chiefs trophy on my plebes hand. For some frame of reference the plebe in question wears a size 14 shoe and the hands match the feet :jaw:

Capt MJ - Oh yeah! I am going for the MAX! We are planning a graduation party and I am using the photo on my own version of Popeye Spinach cans as the centerpieces on the table. I had thought of the button, but the T-shirt is much more abnoxious!!! I like!!
