Watching and learning about the protocols at the Tomb of the Unknown.

Question: There was one Serviceman directly to the South of the Tomb. He was holding Sabre, wearing navy colored pants with two red stripes and was not wearing a hat (cover). I saw no one else like that. Please fill me in.

Thanks in advance.

I noticed an unattended cover on the ground first in the camera shot, and as the camera panned out I saw the cover-less Marine you refer to. It was very windy there today, and his cover blew off. Did you see how many covers came off of the Old Guard in front of the Capitol earlier in the day? Others very quickly scrambled to pick them up because more units were marching onward.
Damn, our military looked good today!

I couldn't agree more about how good they looked.

I am always especially taken by the those guarding the tomb. It wouldn't surprise me if the protocol is to never leave one's sentry, even if one's cover blows off. I really like that. It shows the importance of their task.

Others you might notice moving around uncovered are military photographers. Of course, they’ll have cameras.

One of my favorite moments during our I-Day trip was when we visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and one of the Guardians remonstrated the crowd for not showing sufficient respect and told them to be quiet.

It was hot, humid, and he was as chill as an iceberg, even though he was in full dress uniform.

It was pretty awesome.
