Son has back to back interviews this weekend, advice? NJ-02

Just returned from interviews. All your advice was outstanding, thank you all who replied. There were a total of 180 interviews this weekend and that doesnt count last weekend. That number only reflects the 2 Senators. It was pretty intimidating for all. He felt he did very well and left all interviews very confident.

Holy Cow, I thought my state (RI) was competitive! Here, each of my senators had between 40-50 applicants for USNA, and 90 or so once the other SA's were factored in. Don't get me wrong, that's still a lot, but nothing close to you guys.

Agree, all advice given in this thread was considered for my Congressman nomination interview yesterday. Thank you! Regarding the handshake, my panel consisted of eight elderly retired military officers. After what I considered a successful interview, I approached the raised dais where they sat and they sprang up to welcome my handshake of appreciation. They seemed caught off-guard by my directness as a young woman, but they were smiling and wished me much luck in my future. I would definitely do it again!

I guess California blows it away with 600 applications for Senator Feinstein? (Don't know if that's only one or all the SAs together)

Sure does. Irony here is that I was born in California, and if I'd stayed, I'd be one of your 600.

I have to admit, though I am extremely impressed with my son, the other candidates were very sharp. My son is an Eagle Scout, Co-Captain of LAX, Boys State, West Point SLS, AP student, 1990 SAT's, etc. I am pretty sure he was average if not below that average of those in attendance. Personally, it's in Gods hands. It is very reassusring to know that our country will be lead by such students such as our children.
I am proud of every one of the students I saw this past weekend.

There were 355 applicants for noms to senators in New Jersey. Each senator will nominate 10 candidates, for a total of 20 noms from the pool of 355. It didn't matter what SA was applied to. This was news to me, I thought 10 from each senator to each SA for a total of 80. Boy was I wrong!

With all due respect, unless you have seen the files of others, you have no legitimate basis to assume that other candidate files are superior and you are doing yourself a disservice by speculating. I hope that attitude doesn't carry into interviews or it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Congressional Nominations

Hi
Listening to all the numbers really makes me understand how lucky my DS was to get his congressional nomination in California. My DS refused to ask any Democrat Senator or Congressman for a recommendation. So he only applied to one Republican congressman.

Roadking, are you sure?

Are you sure there are only 10 nominations TOTAL or 10 per senator per academy? May I ask the source of your info? Either way, it's extremely competitive in NJ!

I was in my car waiting for DS during his interview at Middlesex County College when a gentleman walked out of the building, he waved to me as he walked by. When I waved back, he came right over and we had about a 5 minute conversation. He was a staffer for Senator Lautenberg and was very friendly and forthcoming. We talked about how seriously the Senators take this process and how honored they are to make these nominations. I asked how large the pool of applicants was and he told me 350 for Sen. Lautenberg and 355 for Sen. Menendez. He said that more than half of the applicants were for USNA and less than half for the other three academies. He said that the interviewers have a numeric scoring system to rate the applicants. The paperwork takes about two weeks for the staff to go through after the interview process and then the recommendations go to the Senators for final review and selections. He said that with the Christmas break it would be early to middle January before anything would be announced. Then I specifically asked him how many nominations are given. I said I understand that each Senator nominates up to ten for each academy for a total of 80 noms. He immediately corrected me by saying that the Senators each only make ten noms for a total of twenty from the entire pool of 355. He said it is very selective and it doesn't matter what SA the candidate is applying to, they each nominate the ten best of their applicants. My heart kind of sank thinking of the odds when he told me this...DS didn't know that he already had a SUPE nomination to USMA on his portal before he even attended the interviews! I hope this clears it up a little bit and the best of luck to you in your desire to serve this country!

Number of Nominations per Senator per SA

@Roadking

That's odd... I had an interview with one of my MOCs last weekend and they made it very clear that they were giving out 10 nominations per SA... Might it depend on district?

Edit: Well, I suppose not 10 nominations but 10 "options" for the SA to pick the best... I'm not sure if I'm using the right terminology, but I hope I expressed the idea clearly enough.

On average, how many people apply for a congressional nomination? (not overall, specific to a particular congresswoman for example)

R.Martin95, I think you are right...I always thought it was 10 per SA! The staffer was so certain that it was 10 total that I believed him. However, I found this quote on Senator Lautenberg's website: "Senator Lautenberg can submit 10 nominations to each Service Academy every year. The only exception is the United States Coast Guard Academy, which does not require a Congressional nomination." So I stand corrected and apologize for the misinformation, maybe the moderator can clear up the confusion. Thx.
