My son has been under Waiver Review for the USNA since January 14, 2023. He was never notified and didn't know of his disqualification he looked at his DoDMERB status on February 9, 2023.

Since then we have sent over documentation from his surgeon and a letter. We have not received any correspondence that DoDMERB received the documentation and forwarded it to the USNA. What should we do now? Should my son contact Admissions? This is taking an extremely long time. My son has had everything done since September 2022 and received his nomination in January.

Thank you so much for all of your help.

Has he emailed his DoDMERB technician to follow up?

“Under waiver review” can be confusing - I believe I saw Mr. Mullen, Deputy Director, DoDMERB, post here that it meant the SA had the results of the DQ and were reviewing whether to forward it to the waiver authority for a potential waiver.

Your son can contact his assigned DoDMERB tech (go to Contacts in left-side menu of DoDMERB home page) to confirm additional documentation was received. DoDMERB serves as the medical evaluation information clearinghouse. Should the waiver authority need the info, they can get it from DoDMERB.

This is all quite normal for this time of year, regardless of when applications were submitted. The DoDMERB process can go well into the spring, and for some whose DQs are problematical, past the mid-April target of when USNA tries to inform candidates of a decision.

The only things a candidate can do is tend alternate plans, finish this academic year strongly, go PT.

No, he didn't even know he has a technician. lol. I just found the technician's name in the website. However, the email address is the generic email for the helpdesk. Should he send an email to the help desk and put to the attention of the technician? Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I found his technician's name under the contacts. However, the tech's email address is the generic help desk email. Should he send an email to the help desk?

The email should be forwarded to his tech. That was the case for my DD. It's frustrating that some of the techs don't have direct email addresses listed, but I can tell you that DD has received responses from her tech within three-four days.

Good advice from poster above.

If your son hasn’t worked his way through all the other DoDMERB home page menu items, I recommend it. Good info on the process.

As an anecdote, DS was DQd in early Dec, couldnt get DoDMERB facilitated follow up appt until March, and didnt receive a USNA answer until May. (Luckily Plan B school was gracious enough to allow a couple extra weeks for decision)

As others have said, this is a marathon. And not one of those has 2:15 type marathons where the runner is barely sweating. but more the 5-6 hour one where the runner is chafing, cramping, od'd on Gu, having to hit every portajohn, and continually questioning why they paid 200 plus just for this pleasure.

This analogy wins the internet today!

Added to this is 1900 dollar combined registration summer seminar and a sports camp.

If I remember correctly the waiver process has the data flow in the opposite direction. As @Capt MJ referenced, the status means that the waiver authority has all the information and is waiting to make a decision. My DD's portal changed to qualified under medical before the DoDMERB changed to qualified. Please keep in mind that just because they requested the documents it is not 100% certain that they the Academy will even review the documents. It is also true that each commissioning source grants waivers and a candidate may get a waiver from one source and not another.

This is important for future candidates.

NASS and CVW are marketing tools for USNA. They do not give a leg up to candidates. 3q qualifications and competition matters.

Go if you can afford it, but don’t sweat it if you can’t.
I don't even know what NASS and CVW are....or a 3q qualification. LOL. All I know is my son has been wanting this since he was a sophomore in hs and this entire process is the equivalent of applying to 10 colleges. LOL. Thank you!

NASS is Naval Academy Summer Seminar. CVW is candidate visitation weekend. 3Q - triple qualified - academically, physically, medically. Acronym list link above gives most acronyms.

I know the wait - my son had more patience than me.

Best of luck to all candidates (and families) waiting.
