In his excitement or anxiety to go get checked in, my son set his bag down and went in to be processed. By the time we realized it, they told us it was probably too late to get it to him and he should just give it to the detailers after we see him this evening after the swearing in. I’m pretty sure he would rather cut off both his feet and hands before embarrassing himself and making himself or the whole squad get punished. The only important things inside were his nighttime retainer, cell phone and a scientific calculator for validation tests. Everything else was just gravy that I could certainly send in a care package. Any thoughts? I know they said they will supply cell phones for kids that don’t have it. I wonder how important the calculator is?

He’ll have to get used to embarrassing himself. Everyone does at some point, and there may or may not be consequences for others. Hand him the bag after the swearing-in, let him deal with it, own his mistake, get on with it. No longer yours to worry about! He will figure it out. And he will have learned a valuable lesson about attention to detail. Military folks are always running mental checklists: CAC card ID, wallet/cash/credit card/driver’s license, orders, glasses, keys, travel info, cover, go bag, proper uniforms and insignia, checklist, duty roster... He will start learning those lessons today.

Don't sweat it....the detailers know these are a bunch of nervous kids (they were in their shoes 3 years ago), they are going to make mistakes and do dumb things. Sure, he might attract some unwanted attention as "that guy who forgot his bag...", but frankly, at worst case it will only last as long as it takes the next Plebe to do something wrong,,,,or about 10 seconds. This will be something to laugh about in a few months.. Besides, what can they do to DS ...cut his hair short and make him join the Navy ?

Yes, DON'T try to Fix things with mailing, etc. He needs to learn to fix things and deal with consequences because that is how HE will learn.
Reread what Capt MJ said about mental checklists. People close to me know that I ALWAYS have a pen for instance and always have a little cash,
never lost my keys or phones, etc. It's all part of attention to detail and being ready (pen/cash/mini-screwdriver).
