My son is flying out to visit a friend in March. He is 18 so unable to rent a car and friend/cadet is banking on borrowing a car but we know not to count of that 100%. Is there a reasonable shuttle service or anything to get him from Colorado Springs Airport to his hotel and or USAFA? Also, any reccomendations on hotels close to Academy and activities? I know he wants to visit Garden of the Gods while there over a weekend. BTW...he is a potential candidate for USAFA after just receiving nominations. Any advice on travel etc is welcome!

There are no general public shuttles from the airport or hotels to USAFA. Best bet is to hire a taxi. IF the taxi is not allowed on base, be ready for a long hike from the gate to the cadet area.

We visited over Thanksgiving Break and stayed at the Hampton Inn I-25 North. It was pleasant, quiet and clean. We could see the football stadium and USAFA airfield across the interstate from our hotel window. We would stay there again.

Check this older thread. There may be taxi companies with approved access inside the USAFA gate.

There are quite a few mid-level hotels off North Gate Boulevard, which is about as close as you can get to the USAFA main entrance. Some decent, affordable eating joints around there too.

It’s easiest to use a car of some type, whether borrowed or Uber/Lyft if the desire is to visit places such as Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs or downtown Colorado Springs. The area is not great with public transportation.

If renting a car, check out Turo. I’m a fan!! Cheap and easy. And my younger than 21 or 25 yr old was able to rent from them.

Another rental option *might* be through Costco, Sams Club, or USAA if you have membership/access to those.

I am headed to visit my son in a couple weeks and I am using Groome Transportation from the Academy Hotel

It’s been awhile since our 2017er graduated, but there was a shuttle service from the airport to The Academy Hotel.

Just use yellow cab or an Uber. I would stay at the Drury or Hampton Inn outside north gate.

Groome Transportation is a shuttle service that provides transportation to/from the airport to Colorado Springs. There is a pick-up/drop-off location at the Academy Hotel (located just outside the South gate of USAFA). For transportation from the Academy Hotel to USAFA, I'd suggest having your son's cadet friend pick him up at the hotel or have your son take a taxi or Uber to Arnold Hall at USAFA. The only way to sightsee around Colorado Springs is by car (renting, Uber, taxi or Turo)

While waiting for my post that lists shuttle and other transportation options to be approved ...

Uber/Lyft are allowed on base. I have discovered that these charge higher in Colo Spgs than anywhere else in the country.
For Uber/Lyft, you need to be clear that you have to have someone who is allowed on base. Most are, but not all.

Sidenote - if your DS is visiting another male, the cadet might be able to have him stay in his dorm room, just have him ask his AOC (and look up the rules in the CS&D).
