So, if there is a government shut down, will this affect if nominations go out? We still have to hear from one more MOC source to see if DS got another nom.

So curious!

What a mess (no matter WHAT side you are on!)

Don't know about noms, but all USAFA intercollegiate athletics have just been cancelled until further notice.

No announcements from the other academies yet, but I would assume they are in the same boat.

I am wondering if the civilian counselors currently processing applications at USAFA & at the other SA's are affected. I assume so which will not help all the current applicants on the forum. All MOC should be put in "timeout" until behavior improves. Since it's supposed to be for 1"/yr. of age, they could be there for a long time!

I'm curious too how this will impact application process as well. Our district MOC has not notified applicants either.

There is a good chance academy applications and the admissions process could slow...not as sure about nomination processes.

There will be many DoD employees exempt from furlough. Generally they will fall into groupings like: required for national security reasons, health and safety, intelligence...there are more.

I'm not sure the academies can tie admissions folks into those groupings.

MOCs are exempt from furlough by law. I'm not sure about their staff members.

Here is my ten cents... If you still waiting to hear about a Nom start calling your Congressional liaisons or offices- as important as these are in here they tend to be shelved in matters like this... Most claim to be familiar with the process but in reality don't really grasp it..

I expect it will impact noms as MOC staff will not be working until the government re-opens. The only people there to answer the phones will be MOCs themselves. Don't confuse the nomination process which is under MOC control with processes, such as admissions and collegiate sports, which are controlled by the academies.

As I mentioned on another thread please keep this thread focused on the impact of the shutdown on nominations. More general comments on the shutdown should be in a new thread under "Off Topic".

Oh, geez! We are also waiting to hear about nominations! What will this mean? Will the Academies extend the January 31 deadline for nominations?

Please also understand that many of the MoCs knew this was coming and know the drop date for noms to be submitted.

I would also point out that just because you did not hear/receive anything does not mean they have not submitted their slate. My DS Cong. selected DS for a nom. He never received a letter or a phone call, but it showed up on his portal.

Don't panic, in all likelihood this was over by the end of this week

Each MOC gets to decide if their staff are deemed essential or not. If the staff were deemed essential but it's not an office directly involved in negotiations then they'll have more time available to work on this since most agencies they typically work with aren't open today so they may actually get nominations finalized faster as their ability to work on other items is stunted.

Senate voting at noon today to fund government for 3 weeks. Not sure if they have the votes for it, but would help get through nominations at least.
