I just posted this on the cc boards but here it goes again.

Heres the story:

I received a Falcon Foundation scholarship and will be attending Marion in August. I'm also using an AFROTC scholarship to help cover the cost. However, I also received 2 speeding tickets. One in feb.; 81 in a 65, and one in april; 41 in a "20".(supposedly a school zone and not to mention my mom and my 5 year old sister were in the car!) I had my lisence suspended for both of them because I am under 18 and thats what they do automaticly in ohio. I just received my papers for my AFROTC scholarship. I am planning to include these on my "civil involvments". Will this be a problem for either my afrotc scholarship or getting into the academy next year? I'm hoping they will just be more upset that I was being reckless and that I could have been in an accident rather then mad...Any input or suggestions??? Thanks

I wish I could give you a better answer, but I am not sure about how much it will affect you. I received a speeding ticket at the beginning of winter break and all that happened to me was that I had to inform my AOC and he had me brief the squad about what to do when you make contact with law enforcement. I got this ticket while at the academy, so I didn't really have to worry about losing my spot. I don't know if anything will happen, because we all make mistakes and such. If you could get in contact with your ALO, I think that they might have better information on what the consequences are. Sorry for not being very much help. Hope everything works out!

Last night my son got pulled over for what the police officer called "going too fast". The officer didn't have any radar on, and was sitting in a parking lot when S drove by. Because he didn't have any radar to back it up, he issued S a 'warning'. There is no ticket involved, but it does show up on his DMV record for one year unless it happens again, then there is no warning and a ticket is issued. Does anyone think that this should be reported to his ALO, or is it not really that important to the process?

(I, however, did think it was important, and he lost computer, playstation, TV and driving priveledges for one week.)

Any feedback from anyone who has been through this would be appreciated.

I don't know the motor vehicles laws in WI but can he go have his day in traffic court? A State trooper friend of mine once told my oldest daughter (after her first speeding ticket) always go to traffic court.

Sounds like you had your own "internal" traffic court at home - does your son know how fast he was going and/or did he think he was going too fast?
As far as his ALO - don't really know - might not hurt. Also would help him eat humble pie.

There is really no way to fight a warning, since there is no ticket or fine. Son says he was probably doing 35 in a 25 zone. I know where it happened, and I can see how you could go that fast. I did thank S for his honesty, which is why his 'confinement' (as he calls it) is only one week. I guess I will tell him to email his ALO and ask her what she thinks. S is really quite concerned about this affecting USAFA.

Disclose it, but I doubt it will change anything. It happens.

I'm on the same page with Boss & Hornet. Let 'em know. Usually anything above 10 MPH doesn't raise an eye brow as told to me by a government official (due to security clearances, ect.) Son had two tickets senior year. One moving violation 20 over in a school zone the day they changed the zone & put up new signs & another he fought in court over a blind spot with a historical tree in town vs. the stop sign that is blocking view. I saw a chain saw light up in his eyes when the judge said, "Hmmmmm I dunno". He reported it to his academy & nothing was said. His admissions guy told him it was good to report it so do it. Son drives, what he was told, a "cop candy" type of car so you kids just slow down & be safe. It isn't worth the hassle. I say this while son is out riding around in a car with racing stripes.....

Airport, keep your foot out of it baby. There's no hurry to get where you're going. :wiggle:

Well I just got my first ticket today..54 in a 35. Luckily he let me off with a warning for speeding but gave me a seatbelt ticket instead. He said it's an infraction and it won't go on my record.

Will the air force academy find this out?

Probably not. If it comes up in any paperwork where they ask you to claim it, then claim it. Won't hurt you.

In my opinion, always disclose when the question clearly asks. For example, in the appointee kit, the security questionairre asks about your police record. It states "Leave out traffic fines of less than $150 unless the violation was alcohol or drug related." The instances above... maybe pm Fleiger and get his input.

This is just a general observation -- where things like this can come back is in security clearance investigations, down the road. And, if you are asked to explain some infraction in writing, always tell what you learned from your experience, "hat in hand." Just my 2 cents...

I had one for 26 over :)frown:) a pretty good while back (before I had applied to the USAFA). My admissions counselor said that it didn't have any bearing on an appointment. They just want to make sure that you don't have any charges pending when you get here.

So I would think as long as you get everything 100% taken care of while you're still at home you'll be good. I would also call up there or get in touch with your ALO to be sure though. Good luck! Dealing w/ a ticket sucks. I don't want to do it again.

Not quite my 74MPH in a 45MPH zone, but you should slow down a bit. Maybe sure you cite any tickets above a certain amount...they will ask for security investigation.

Stealth, I almost always find myself speeding in WI because I come from MN and am used to a 30mph limit usually going a few over, so I really have to concentrate to keep from speeding too much in the 25 zones.

Ahem....attention to detail is a good skill to learn...

I just got back from getting a 76 in a 65, first ticket. I was coasting down from a 200 foot high flyover and hadn't hit the brakes yet when the cop got me. I haven't gotten any warnings before. I've received an appointment already but haven't finished the paperwork and sent it in yet. There is no place on the appointment paperwork to put tickets, civil involvements, etc. When I filled out the civil involvements section on my application, I put down nothing since I had none at the time. Should I call my ALO to let him know or should I call the Academy directly or both? And will this have any impact on my appointment?

I'd call your ALO. They are very informative, and want the best for you. They will give you the right advice that will allow you to get through the process smoothly.
