Is it possible to get a medical waiver in the Marines for Spondylolisthesis? I had corrective surgery 5 years ago and never experience back pain

Are you enlisting or joining a commissioning program? The standards may be different.

My daughter had surgery for her spondylolysthesis at age 12. She had her L-5 and S-1 fused. She was denied a waiver for both USAFA and AFROTC twice. She was able to participate in varsity volleyball and track for 4 years in high school and runs marathons to this day (she is 27) but was not granted a waiver. Today she works as a civilian DPT for the Navy which is her way of serving.

My son never had surgery but did receive a waiver, 2017 for AROTC 4 yr scholarship winner

I am trying to enlist, I as well played contact sports in high school and participate in physical training with poolees each week and have never suffered any back pain. I was denied once but I’m hoping that if I get enough doctors (my primary doctor and doctors that I work with at the hospital) to sign a letter stating that yes I have hardware but my back is not any different from a person with a normal back, I’m hoping that it’ll give me a chance at a physical at least.

Can I ask you how your son received the waiver? I’m really interested and willing to try anything at this point to get accepted.

We saw a spine specialist that was a WP grad and an army surgeon as well. He examined him and wrote a letter stating that he felt he was able to perform all tasks required for Army and his injury would not be an issue. We sent that to Dod. Process takes a long time and patience is needed. Exam and letter sent was in April 2017, wasn’t cleared by Dod until August. Definitely worth the wait. Good luck to you.

My son never had surgery and got waiver for USNA extremely quickly. Currently waiting on waiver for NROTC and AFROTC, but expect them any time now. The doc Dodmets sent him to stated no reason he shouldn't be fully qualified.

I got a letter from my surgeon who’s also a Marine. Fingers crossed it works out thank you for your help!
