Hello all,

My parents live in CO, about 25 minutes North of the Academy on I-25. I was wondering if anyone had any idea about the process to apply to be a Sponsor Family as I have had a difficult time finding anything about it anywhere. I know my brother's (Class of '07) SF didn't live in Colorado Springs per se, but I was wondering also if there was a radial dis-qualifier for prospective SFs?

Actually, just found this from an email from 4 years ago:

"As long as you reside within the 50-mile radius allowable, you may certainly sponsor any of our cadets. If you are in the process of relocating to the area, you must provide a permanent address before we can proceed with your application."

In the current Cadet Sponsor Handbook (updated 24 Mar 2014), it says: "Cadets must stay within a 150-mile radius of the Academy."

Here's a link to the Sponsor page: Cadet Sponsor Program

Sounds like the distance may have been increased to increase the number of candidate families.

We have some great friends (retired military) who used to live in Monument (just North of the Academy) but who now live in Erie (approximately 85 miles away). I was worried that they would be unable to sponsor our DD because they moved, but was thrilled to learn they're still inside the acceptable radius.

On a side note, they have to apply to become a cadet sponsor, which includes a fair amount of paperwork including two letters of recommendation. We joked that since he had recommended her for the Academy, now DD could write a letter of recommendation for him!

Just to clarify, the application process for a family to sponsor their own cadet is pretty easy; the application process to sponsor non family members is where the letters of recommendation etc are requried.

However, sometime during that C4 year. we became the "defacto" sponsor to many of my son's friends just because they came home with him most of the time rather than go to their designated sponsor. It was great to be able to get to know them all etc. Would not trade that experience for anything
