My ds (co 20019) is interested in having a sponsor family while at usna but has grandparents who live only one hour drive away from Annapolis. His hometown is a 6 hrs drive. He doesn't want to take up a sponsor a plebe from further away may need....like someone from Texas or California. What is the deal with the number of sponsor families available to make these connections?

Don't worry about "taking up a sponsor family." Sponsor families can take up to 4 plebes. We usually take 4 and occasionally 5.

There will also be many nearby Maryland mids who won't ask for a sponsor family. Some plebes don't ask for a family. It all works out.

Having grandparents only an hour away will be nice, and asking for a local sponsor family would provide a close-in option for times when the town liberty window is short. Always worth a test drive.

We live about 35 minutes away from the Academy. Our son is a Plebe, we signed up to be sponsors for him and 2 others. We always end up with EXTRAs. Ms. Rose Clark, who runs the program, is a great resource. She answered all our questions. When we went to training, it was recommended that any family member that was going to pick or drop off our son should sign up and take the sponsor training. All the plebes I have spoken to say that having a sponsor home to go to makes Plebe year a little easier.

We are just over an hour away from USNA (depending on traffic!). I've been told that DS will be assigned a sponsor family because we are too far away to be his. I think that's great. In some ways, I figure the sponsor families know better what to expect during Plebe year and beyond, whereas we aren't really sure. I hope he and his friends will also visit us when they need a break.

Definitely have your DS apply for a sponsor family. Our DD loves being able to leave the yard. DD and friends all go to each other's sponsor family homes. The sponsors have been great at taking them for holidays when they could not get home, and providing rides to and from BWI. I wish we lived in the area so we could sponsor mids!

Being a 100% disabled veteran and single parent (son is a Naps candidate, daughter is entering HS) who is 23 hours by car from the academy, Id love to know how the sponsor family works and be directed to any resources. Thank you.

She only handles Academy sponsors.. I guess I need to search for Naps numbers now?

I don't believe NAPS at Naval Station Newport, RI, has a sponsor program. Different rhythm of life up there. I am sure NAPSters or NAPSTER parents can weigh in with accurate info.

Rose handles the USNA sponsor program for Annapolis sponsors.

Thank you for the information. I just spoke to Naps Admin and they do assign families for Napsters. Thank you.
