Hi, I am a junior in high school and have been in contact with West Point coach Mcdougle for the cross country and track team. I ran as a sophomore 4:29 in the 1600 and 2:03 in the 800 and 9:40 3200 this weekend as a junior. We have talked 3 times and he said he would stay in contact. I am a good student but not outstanding, GPA of 3.9 and 1230 SAT. I want to serve this great nation more than anything, and would go right to the Army after High School if I dont go to West Point. Could anyone with info tell me if they think this means I may be recruited, and how much this would help me! Thank you so much sorry for long post

If you can make it sub 4:20 in the mile, 1:53 in the 800, and sub 9:10 in the 2-mile, you may be recruited. My roommate is on the track team, and he's saying that you can have a good time in one event, but unless you can have good times in multiple events, or do great in one event, you'll be struggling. Academically, you seem strong. Stay there and you may just get an appointment.

The term recruited can be used loosely. Below is my unofficial assessment of WP sports recruiting in increasing order of what I consider being recruited:
1. E-mail/phone call with a coach
2. Attend sports camp at WP
3. Request from coach for game film (not applicable for all sports)
4. WP coach indicates that he would like candidate to play for them IF they receive and accept an offer following the standard process
4. WP coach attends candidate game
5. WP coach offers candidate a "blue chip" (another vague term, but this usually indicates a LOA is forthcoming from the admissions office)
6. Candidate receives a LOA (includes an invitation to spend the night at WP and attend a game at WP if possible.

Beyond that, it's up to the candidate to meet all of the other requirements of being a WP cadet (3Q, nomination, etc.).

I have been reading this forum for the past month or so. There is a lot of value in people sharing their experience and view points. I have learned a lot and appreciate it. However, I also notice that people provide advice on things for which they have no experience or knowledge.

@aspiringrecruit You have been in contact with the coach. You need to ask him/her if you are a recruit for your sport. In some sports the coaches are on twitter and will dm back and forth with recruits during periods when it is permissible. Finally, at least in the sport that I am familiar with, the "blue chip" athletes actually get a written offer from the coach to play at WP, as long as they can fulfill the entrance requirements. If the coach is interested in you- they will keep in touch. They will actually ask you to have your school submit transcripts to him/her as early as mid-junior year to see if you are on the right track to be a serious recruit.

You have gotten some good advice here, but be guided by the feedback you receive from the coach. Good luck!
