For those new appointees of the class of 2021:

From my understanding, every cadet must participate in a sport. It seems lots of cadets just do intramural sports. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, my knowledge is pretty limited) But what do you do if you know what sport you want to do and it's not an intramural? In my case, I'm interested in the Sabre Drill Team. I have spun sabre for 3 years for my high school colorguard, so I'm more qualified than most. I know this isn't even close to what the sabre drill team does, but I would very much like to join. Where do I even start for that? Can I even do it as a Doolie?

Thank you!!

I'd try to find the email of the sabre team coach/leader and ask him all of your questions, he's probably the most qualified person to answer you! That's what I did for the Cross Country coach and he was very kind and quick responding.

I am not a member, but I have a bunch of friends on the Sabre Drill Team, so I know a little bit about it. No experience is required, but it is a huge time commitment (somewhere around 1.5-2 hours per day after school during the 4* year, and still a significant amount of time as an upperclassman). Shortly after the start of the school year, the Sabre Team will send out an invitation email to the entire class of 2021, including more details about how to get involved.

You asked about whether or not 4*'s can participate. As a matter of fact, those interested in joining the Sabre Team must sign up at the beginning of their 4* year. The reason for this is that the (7ish month long) Sabre Team training program parallels the 4* year in many ways, with an emphasis on physical fitness and mental toughness. After completion of the program, team candidates receive their status as official team members.

Sabre Team is not a "sport", per se, but I do believe the whole team receives LOS status (i.e. Sabre practice excuses them from most training requirements such as squadron training sessions). I think they are also exempt from intramurals, but I'm not completely sure about this.

If you are going on an appointee tour, talk with your cadet host and they should be able to put you in contact with someone on the team. Good luck and keep working hard! :thumb:
