My son is excited about his appointment to USCGA. Does anyone know exactly how the sports thing works? He wrestled varsity in HS, is a late bloomer physically, and has always been a solid athlete in everything he has done. Specifically:

How hard is it to make a varsity team (for example, if he wants to be on the football, rifle or sailing team but has limited experience, do they teach him?)?

Would a club like boxing count as a "sport"?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. We realize it is D3, but I am sure the competition is still very tough.

He should pick something he likes and try out for the team. I love the shooting sports, so I latched onto that one.

With various weapons teams, a lot of SAs consider the attitude to be paramount, so they interview first.
Pistol, Rifle, or Combat Arms are about the overall fit within the team, just as much as shooting ability or prior experience.
Combat Arms is NOT a varsity sport however. If that was what he wanted to do, he could do a lot of other things to fulfill his "sport" requirement.
With only 900 Mids, the chances of getting selected for one of the shooting teams are greater than at the other SAs (with their 5,000+ Mids)
So he has that going for him!

An important piece of information to be aware of is that while USCGA as a whole is classified as a D3 institution, not all sports are on the D3 level. In fact, there are a few that compete at the D1 and D2 levels. Funnily enough, the few that you mention to compete at a D1 level. The pistol, rifle, and sailing teams are D1 sports. Rugby, while still classified as a club sport, competes against D1 and D2 schools...and often does very well!

With respect to walk-ons, I can't speak for the Football Team, but I do know that sailing does take walk-on cadets where their only experience has been Swab Summer sailing. Rifle takes walk-ons as well.

Yes, club sports (for the most part) satisfy the sports requirement expected of all cadets. The boxing team often has individuals competing at the national level competitions and their workouts are some of the most difficult. They also Friday Night Fights during the fall semester as an in-house competition. Other examples of club sports that earn a sports credit are Hockey, the Triathlon Club, the Sandhurst Competition Team, and I believe Water Polo (although I'm not 100% positive on that one).

Ahem...Cadets, not Mids. We already get lumped into the Navy enough without the additional misnomers. ;):D

Sorry!

Semper Paratus!
