I know some sort of physical activity is required. For those who are not recruited to play a sport, are there club sports available in place of intramural sports?
I want to do club swimming but idk if that’s available or how it will be. Is it coed? Is it required everyday? Is it at the same time everyday? Is it like chill social hour or hard workouts? Are ppl in club swimming very experienced swimmers?

The list of competitive clubs that you can try out for and will meet your sport requirement is located here: https://www.westpoint.edu/military/directorate-of-cadet-activities/competitive-sports-clubs

there is no club swimming. There has historically been intermural swimming available.

Club sports typically practice five days a week depending on when they are in season and what level of drill authos they have been given. Some do two a day practices. The commitment depends by
sport.

Intermurals you’ll be practice/competing 2-3 days a week depending on drill requirements and whether you have a parade coming up

That’s what I’m confused about... what IS intramural swimming? With intramural sports do cadets have the freedom to pick one-two sport to stick to? Or is it different sports that one is required to participate in?

Intermurals means you aren’t traveling like corps/club squad teams representing the Academy as they play external teams. In intermurals, there’s a league set up essentially with a team from each company and these company teams compete against each other. Every “season” there’s a certain number of sports offered by DPE that companies must submit teams into.

You submit preferences for what is available and your company athletic officer/NCO will build teams. Your choice will be limited based on your class year (plebes typically get last choice), the requirement for your company to field teams in all offered sports in a given season (so not everyone can play one sport and some people get pushed into sports that need spots filled they didn’t want to play - aka plebes), and what DPE has decided to ultimately offer.

For competitiveness, some companies take certain sports more seriously than others based on company pride and personalities involved so your experiences will vary and really you won’t be able to gauge this until you get there and learn the vibe of your company. You’ll run the gambit from folks who played the sport before and are very, very good to complete newbies to the folks who continue to demonstrate why the quote “every cadet an athlete

All intermurals are coed. So yea, if you’re a female cadet and get stuck as a plebe on the company grappling team, you’re going to still compete within your weight class.

What are your personal thoughts on traveling to compete with club sports; is it worth it? I have heard from some old grads that it is worth it try and get on a club team to get a change of scene.

For me it was 100% worth it. My teammates and I are still incredibly close for the experiences we shared. Plus getting out of drill and traveling was fun. As long as you can manage the time requirements (some of the club squad teams can be more similar to corps squad time requirements if you make it), I would absolutely encourage it

Club sports are a good deal. You can get drill authos, travel paid for by the academy, and incredible friendships that last a lifetime. All of that without having to qualify for an NCAA level collegiate team like the Corps Squaders. You get most of the benefits they get in a club sport package.

That actually sounds great!

That sounds super fun, and like a good balance between company athletics, and NCAA.

Yep, my team was commonly referred to as the “corps squad graveyard” because we regularly had NCAA athletes come join the team looking for a serious team commitment that wasn’t quite as serious as their original corps squad team

What did you do if you don’t mind me asking?
