Hi everyone!
While attending USAFASS, they gave a presentation on the different types of sports one can participate in while attending USAFA. I played basketball and football while in middle school, but my high school doesn't offer sports. I've been CrossFitting for almost 4 years, but I would love to participate in a team sport while at USAFA (assuming I'm offered an appointment). I wish I could've played in high school, and I'm worried it might be too late for me to join one coming into my senior year. Any advice?

Intercollegiate. Club. Intramural. All great options for participating in sports at USAFA. Understand that today, USAFA competes at the highest college level in all the intercollegiate sports I can think of (prior years saw random mixtures like DII swim). As a result, walking on is difficult but not impossible. I have seen walk-ons make fencing, cheer, and other niche sports but it is not common.

That said, clubs are a great middle ground for someone who wants to compete off campus. I competed all over the US in club sports and had a blast.

Intramurals are available and have the smallest time commitment. There is a small season that lasts a few weeks and you play ~ twice a week.

Club sports are an excellent option for those who are too good for intramurals and not good enough for D1 varsity. It can also be an issue of commitment — someone may have the skill level but not the commitment to devote so much time and energy to the higher level.

Cool thing about club teams is that you have coaches and managers, play other colleges, go on road trips, and wear your SA’s colors. Couple years ago, we attended the epic Navy vs. Air Force football game. After Navy’s last-minute win, we watched the Mids sing “Navy Blue & Gold.” Later that weekend, we watched DD’s club team take on Air Force. After the Mids won, it was so stirring to see them lined up, fists over hearts, belting out their own rousing version of “NB&G.”
