If you want to attempt to play a sport at the USMMA when should you start reaching out to coaches?

I was a swimmer and an All American Diver at KP in the 80's. I've spoken with both the swim coach and the diving coach many times. the are both good guys. The team is always competitive. I would reach out tot the coach ASAP. the school is very specialized and hard to recruit for. Are you more of a swimmer or diver?

I am being recruited to play soccer at the academy. I started reaching out to the coach late junior year. The earlier you start the better. You should also consistently be contacting them so your name will be in the back of their head.

The swim coach at KP is a real good guy. I learned way more swimming from the lacrosse and football coaches than that guy.

I am a diver and have never swam. I won the 1A championship in Georgia and was the captain for the team freshman year. My top score freshman year was 221. Ive never done 3m diving though and plan to start very soon. KP is my dream school and being a college diver is also a dream of mine. And what do you mean by specialized and hard to recruit for? Because its a service academy or other reasons?

Yes, it is a different conversation with recruited athletes who likely have many schools interested in them. They are challenged for size of campus, student life, military discipline, service commitment upon graduation, students must pass a licensing exam to graduate, students must spend a year at sea, and so many more specialized requirements and differences than a traditional college.

To begin with, the school is not for everyone. Then, layer on the scarcity of top athletes in the country. The short of it is that there are a few competitive divers in the country who are interested in taking on these challenges when considering their college experience.

Since KP is a D3 service academy it is a difficult school for the coaches to recruit to. The Diving program has to quite a history with dozens of All Americans and 3 national champions. Definitely contact the coach. Send him some video it can only help.

If you don't mind me asking? What were some of the dives you did in college? Was everything pike?

I had a full pike list on 1m w reverse 2 1/2 tuck. Also back and rev twisters to my head. 3m was a full 2/12 list tuck. With back and reverse 2 1/2 twisters. What’s you list in HS?

Yes it has.. I had Jackie Miller as a cadet back around 1989 when I was sailing Mate with APL. As I understand it he was an All American diver on both the 1 and 3 meter boards. I Believe Jackie graduated around 1990 or 1991. Also my older son was at Kings Point with Joel Meyer, who was a National Champion diver back in 2004. My younger son and Joel competed against one another while both were in high school. Last I heard, Joel was flying for the navy.

Contact them early! Have some tape and communicate with them. KP is a D3 school and athletics are important but they can’t push through someone who doesn’t have the marks and test scores. But if you qualify with test scores GPA and leadership they are a great resource. DS didn’t get an appointment last year for class of 2023 but the coaches stuck by him and recruited him again for class of 2024 and we are proud to say the portal updated today and said “An appointment is extended to you to attend the United State Merchant Marine Academy” 🇺🇸⚾🚢⚓
