Does anyone have experience with either tryouts for sprint football or lacrosse at the Academy? My son is torn between which one to tryout for. He likes them both the same. I assume tryouts for both are during Plebe Summer? Just looking for any info that might help him decide. Thx.

Both teams are very competitive but lacrosse in particular is a sport in which the current head coach actually cut a significant number of recruited players coming from NAPs in his first year. He also speaks in favor of a smaller roster and has a big recruiting class coming in. There's an excellent club lacrosse program, though (which does sometimes have cuts too).

Sprint football also recruits but at least from what I've observed the chances of making it as a walk-on may be better.

Maybe your son was recruited in one or both of these sports, in which case this probably isn't relevant to you, but I read your post as suggesting your son wants to walk on. If he does decide to try to walk on in a sport, I'd advise trying to contact the coaches and give them some info on his skills/accomplishments before-hand if possible so he's not just a number on the mandated open tryout day.

concur with Sox... if your son isn't being recruited. The chances of making the lacrosse team are slim. If that is what he really wants to play would focus on the club team. And if he is good enough, trust me... the D-1 coach will hear about it. Traditionally the sprint football team has had little no cuts. The weight limit has gone up since I was at USNA, so that opens it to more Mids. They will have spring tryouts in plebe summer or right when school starts. He can tryout for that and see how it goes. If he doesn't like it or doesn't make the cut then he can move on to club lacrosse team. More than likely he will end up liking the personality and team of one over the other and that will help him decide more than anything. Good luck!

Sorry I did not mention he would just be a walk on. Thank you both for your comments. Much appreciated!!
