DS and fellow mid spent two days in CO, first time snow boarding for my kid. Now a road trip through four corners, a historic canyon, the greatest canyon, and sin city in the plan for tomorrow. Love the novice photographer he is becoming.

We took a family trip to that historic canyon and the park next door almost 6 years ago… Amazing! That is just a gobsmacking gorgeous area of our country! Glad he’s enjoying it.

Depending on your route, Chaco Canyon is pretty amazing. Also in that area, and you’ll have to hoof it a bit, the Bisti Badlands.

So my son, a questionable decision maker, decided to spend his last spring break with his mid friend, decided to go to Key West instead of spending it with his father in upstate NY snow-belt.

While walking on the beach today he sees a guy with a navy shirt on. He wanted to walk up to him and say go navy. Before he did, he recognized the man as Vice Admiral Ted Carter.

Had a nice chat with him.

The man who signed off on letting my vision deficient son in. :)

Classic Navy-is-a-small-world. I am sure it made VADM Carter’s day. He could also run over to NAS Key West and say hi to the skipper, CAPT Beth Regoli ‘99, at USNA for duty as a BattO and SHAPR program officer just before this.

My son said VADM Carter was extremely happy they said hello to him and thanked them.

I texted him and told him to meet CAPT Regoli. He doesn’t listen to me though.

DS is on flight home as I type 🥳
Spent the first part of Spring Break with his USNA Buddies in Florida. He has a Pirates of the Caribbean lamp in his room that I have turned on every evening since he was a little boy. Now that Mother B is his new home it only gets turned on when he comes home. As I walked towards his room this evening to turn it on, I teared up as usual. My heart ❤️ is full of joy.

Enjoy spoiling him upon return. What's his favorite meal going to be? Keep the light burning. I glad he's heading home.

Whenever DD visited home and then returned to the Yard, she always left her bedroom in shambles. I came to see it as benign rebellion against the exactitude of life in Mother B, where there is a place for everything and everything in its place.

I thought for sure that when she became a Marine, she’d bring home that newly found sense of tip-top order. No such luck! She visited for a long weekend in February and — yet again — left her bedroom in shambles! You’d think that rebellious teen from high school was still in residence. But fine. If that’s the price of an occasional visit, we can live with it. ☺️

DS and fellow MIDN are staying with a friend of the other mid’s dad.

My kiddo, whose childhood home is a double wide manufactured home, is in a bit of shock. This host home is literally a palatial, classy mansion. Not going to lie, the pictures are jaw dropping. I think I saw a neighboring home on a real estate show for Sothebys last week.

What is more impressive to him than the house, are the owners. Self made, humble, educated, business creators and owners who employ many here in the US and work to adapt to the new technology and keep their non tech workers through training and diversification. He keeps texting me their story and their journey and accomplishments with their employees and their businesses.

I’m so glad the glitz impressed but the real stuff is what has left its mark on him. Hard work and self made people are real. Told him to soak it in, listen, be gracious, and send hand written thank you notes.

Lol my son is impeccable at the yard. And he reverts back to an animal at home.

And somebody taught him to have the mouth of a sailor. ;)

Yeah I let the inner slob come out of my kid when he is home. It’s less than 80 hours of freedom on average and that is priceless.

He cannot be in the kitchen without a shirt and he must rinse and load his dishes. His room is one thing. But this home cook cannot abide a dirty kitchen or stove. I’m old fashioned that way.

My heart was sad today. A few miles from the location my son and his friend hiked turned into a flooded nightmare the next day and hit hard. Two men died in the slot canyon due to flooding. One was a USAFA grad who was decorated for his SERE instruction.

Horrible timing. They were well prepared, provisioned, and in the wrong place at the wrong time. My heart is with those that loved them.

How things have changed in three years. Mids are enjoying spring break and figuring to return to Mother B this weekend for the stretch run to Commissioning Week.

Just three years ago, DD spent spring break scuba diving in Florida. Toward the end, she called home to say, “They’re shutting down the Yard and sending us home.” Things didn’t return to “normal” for another year. Sigh. 😕 Embrace the present, for we know not what the future brings.

It’s hard to believe those Plebes who left for Spring Break in 2020 and didn’t return that academic year will soon be commissioned officers!
