Last summer, my DD attended SLE and then NASS, back to back. Because SLE ended the day before NASS began, it was a little crazy logistically. We are from the west coast, and she couldn't rent a car, so I flew out, rented a car, and drove her from WP to Annapolis where we stayed the night before I dropped her off at USNA and then flew home. It was a bit "extra," but I wanted to make sure DD knew the differences in the two Academies, especially since we are not a military family and don't know a lot of people who are in this particular subculture.
For DD, who likes being outdoors and in the woods and "rolling in the mud," that experience helped so much that she dropped her USNA application. She decided Army: either West Point, and if not West Point, then civilian college with Army ROTC. As an aside, that also helped narrow down civilian college choices as some on her list did not have ROTC or only had Air Force ROTC.
So if you have the opportunity, I'd say go for it!
