Standard Issue Socks

If this forum is any indication, being Mom/Dad makes one a WP grad and a military expert...

That's going to get you flamed, sir. However, I certainly understand the sentiment behind the complaint. I share it myself from time to time. The internet makes it so that anyone can have a publicly-broadcast opinion. While I think that can be good, it can also be not so good. On here, it means that some of the stuff put out on SAF must be taken with grains upon grains of salt.

I do think that the parents on here have valuable stuff to share on certain subjects, though. I think this is especially true when it comes to helping the parents of prospective cadets/mids. Perhaps socks and underwear choices fit into that category.

From a VMI grad who does not claim to be a military expert.

I have no doubt. However, I expect that the ruffled feathers will belong to those who felt that remark land close to home.

I've said it more than once...this board is best when we all stick to our core competencies, which in this case means sharing what we know as FACT from actual experiences, and not passing on rumors, innuendo, or second/third/fifth-hand "knowledge" of how the Army and West Point function.

There's nothing wrong with this thread or the suggestions offered. I took the chance to make a broader point.

I was responding to your comment about underwear. My cadet took plenty of compression shorts. However, I would hesitate to tell someone to take lots of underwear, such as boxers, only to be told to leave them in their personal bag that will be stored until A-Day. I think most companies were fine with compression shorts.

Sorry for the confusion.........I did mean underwear as well. His preference was for boxer briefs not tidy whities.............he put them in a ziploc bag and took them when he switched his stuff over to his army bag.....

Ok, so to regroup so that the original question is correctly answered...when I take my son to get his running shoes, I can get them fitted with white crew socks with the understanding that he may or may not get to use the ones he brings with him to Beast depending upon what the cadre say.

Correct?

Has anyone tried white boxer/briefs? They are the same cloth material as tidy whities briefs, but made like boxers because they extend down the legs. If anyone knows how this type of underwear worked out, please let me know. That's all I've worn for the past several years. Also, do cadets receive regular mail during Beast or just mail periodically (say...once a week)?

Thats all my son wore..........a lifesaver. They work very well, but you sill need compression shorts occasionally. Thats why he took extra.

As for mail..........it depends how ofter your cadre can get you to the mailbox. It depends on what going on....

Yes, plain white crew socks for the fitting and CBT. No logos.

Mail depends on the cadre but it is a safe bet that he will check it anywhere from every day to every three days. During my Beast, our cadre sent mail out every morning and took us down to receive it every 1-2 days. Of course during the second half of Beast, it becomes more random depending on when they are in the field.

Thank you for the information. Just want to make sure I've done my job now so that when he gets there, he is equipped to do his!

or whatever color boxers your heart desires. It's not like anyone's going to be inspecting...
Lol that may be true but I've read stories about people trying to hide their dirty underwear before room inspection, was hoping I'd hear something about that :yllol:.
