Without a LOA It’s now about the same as anyone else after receiving a MOC nomination....... 1 in 5350 I would say (535 MOC‘s times 10 people listed per slate)

It would actually be better than 1 in 10 - 535 selected from a Max slate of 5350 - minus unfilled slots on slates and non 3q’d candidates - LOA’s mean very little, it’s the Full Appt Offer that matters

I think s/he said "principal" nom. They will win the slate and be offered appointment provided they are 3q, so chances are quite good.

Can I ask how were you notified that you are 3Q?

I think it just means you passed your CFA & DODMERB and are academically qualified (which I would think happens when they go ahead & give you a candidate number during your initial application?). here’s a thread, now a decade old... are people notified of being 3Q? I haven’t read of “official notifications” on this site in my one year of lurking/ reading ... anyone else ??

That would not be correct. 3Q is Physically (CFA) and Medically (DoDMERB) and Academically qualified to compete for an Appointment. The first two are pretty self-explanatory the third is well up to each academy. In the past USMA has sent a letter stating a candidate was 3Q in code. To my knowledge USNA and USAFA do not. ( I'm sure someone will chime in to correct me if this is not correct.) USMA's letter from states: Col. McDonald has reviewed you application and you are the type who will thrive at USMA. All candidates who are Academically, Medically and Physically qualified with a nomination are considered for admission. At the end of the letter candidate is offered an Overnight Visit which is reserved for our most qualified candidates. (Letter of Encouragement or LOE) At USNA your BGO knows if you are 3Q but we are NOT supposed to tell candidates. Hope this helps.

You are correct. USAFA does not formally inform candidates of when they are 3 q’d. I suppose a formal notification of not being 3q’d would be a TWE.

Chime: Not correct (at least as it relates to USMA per your example).

DS received a 3Q Letter from his Regional Admission Officer on 12/4 stating:

"We have received all your application information and the Admissions Committee has qualified your file academically, medically and physically. We are still waiting for a nomination before we can consider you for an appointment."

What you describe (partly) above is a LOE from Col. McDonald - USMA Director of Admissions, DS received this on 11/4 stating:

"The information you provided indicates that you are the type of competitive and accomplished person who will thrive on the unique blend of programs we offer... With this letter, I am authorizing you for an Overnight Visit which is reserved for our most competitive candidates."

What I don't know is WHY some 3Q's get a letter and some don't, and WHY some highly qualified candidates get a LOE and some don't? My son feels fortunate to have received this as there has been no such communication from either USAFA or USNA.

so just to confirm, USNA does not reach out to candidates letting them know they are 3Q? thanks for the info!

🤔 Boy that don't take long! Not sure where I was wrong? But I know again someone (with a lot of experience) will tell me 😂!

As it relates to USMA, our son received an LOE from them in early fall, offering overnight. When he received a nomination to USMA he received a letter indicating he is 3Q and in now in the national pool awaiting review by board for admission. As far as USNA, USMMA and USAFA no word other than, your application is complete, pending review.

Perhaps not "wrong"...just not clearly differentiated between the messaging in a LOA vs. LOE...or a 3Q letter, for that matter.
3 kids worth of experience (thus far), but hardly an expert!

@Dadx4 my bad, I thought that if I passed the CFA, the DODMERB tests, and hadn't been notified that I wasn't academically qualified then I was 3q'd. Thanks for clearing that up everybody.
