We're about to roll over to a new application year. Most award notices and TWEs have already been received with a few more still to come. Already the "chance me" threads are starting for 2019 scholarships. As a parent or applicant, you picked up a lot of experience in the application process. You all have experience that you can contribute to others and all have inspirational stories to tell. For those who won scholarships there will be more inspirational stories and even some "don't do this" tales, still to come. The same holds true for those who enroll in one of the ROTC programs and continue your pursuit to commission without a scholarship (at present).

I'd like to encourage every one to stick around and contribute your experience to next years applicants. I did almost 8 years ago now, and the satisfaction and rewards have been awesome. Plus it always continues to help me feel connected with my kid in some way, even when he's overseas for a couple years.

Stick around. Contribute.

Thank you for posting this as I have pondered the question you just answered, what do I do now as my DS is about to graduate and continue to the next step in his journey.

As you know, my DS did not get an NROTC-MO scholarship, and is/has been struggling with whether or not to enlist or continue to college (accepted to The Citadel). I believe (after yours and AROTC Dad's help) he is going to give it a year at The Citadel and decide what he thinks after that (he is having senioritis and is 18 years tired of school work - LOL). I am confident that whatever he decides and wherever he goes that he will be successful.

I will forever be greatful to this forum for ALL of the amazing information it has to offer and I will continue to be a member and offer help where I can.

I plan to stick around and not put my foot in my mouth too much.
What I know now that I didn't know then is that the USNA.edu website pretty much answers every question ever asked here.
Since "mileage may vary" however, SAF (and the invaluable experience from members) is still pretty important. :D

I can say that we just got back from touring the AFROTC detachment where my DS will be attending in fall...DS was impressed and he seems more geared up toward that prospect, but still wants to reapply to USAFA. As a mom, I’m thinking that it’s nice to have him closer to home. Of course we are disappointed that he didn’t get in, but I’m easing into the fact that his plan B is still a great option for him with ROTC, and still giving him some aspect of “college” life. Ufedug8r,

Our DS was a recruited athlete to USNA; he didn’t get in but he received the NROTC scholarship. He was happy knowing that the end goal was still intact and was going to reapply for USNA. In the end he loved the U of South Carolina and he stayed. 4 years later he is now commissioning and is thrilled to be an alumni gamecock.

Don’t be surprised if he stays. Our DD now has the NROTC scholarship and will attend the College of the Holy Cross. My wife is very happy to know our DD is only an hour away. Big difference from being 16 hours away.

Cheers and all the very best.

@rocatlin ,

Are you in the wet part or the dry part of OK? Given your avatar, that is a serious question and I hope it's the former.

Congratulations to your son and wish him continued success!

Like @kinnem, we're 3 yrs post commissioning. It's a very exciting time.

Yes to both on wet and dry. I currently live in the east/wet part. I grew up and still have family farmland in the west / dry / burned part.

I agree @kinnem !!! My DD is finishing her sophomore year, finals are next week. This board has been so valuable, and trust me, the questions don’t stop just because the scholarship application process is over. My DD was a nursing scholarship recipient, and this year decided to change her major, WOW was that a rocky few months, and still continuing, but being on this board helps a Mama stay calm, knowing it will all work out the way it is supposed to. It also makes me happy to know that her experience might help someone else in the future, sticking around is so worth it!

I was wondering if I needed to stick around once he got into college. But I'm realizing that this is really only the beginning and there's so much more I'll need to learn - like how to back off, for starters . Glad to know so many of you will still be here. This is a great online community!

Will do! As a civilian proud dad of a future midshipman this forum helped me to make sense of what DD was dealing with! She just received her Dodmerb "Qualified Unrestricted Line" status (30 days after physical and eye exam) and we are just thrilled to have that behind us so we can focus on graduation. Everyone is just so excited and proud of her!

I've learned a whole lot following and supporting DD thru the whole process and look forward to sharing that knowledge, as well as updates on her progress at the University of Arizona. I know how excruciating the wait is, but believe me, looking back it seems like only yesterday when my then 16 year-old honor student walked into the living room and said "Dad, I want to join the Navy". Looking forward to following along as the candidates for the class of 2023 embark on their journey! Best of luck to all!
